MK Dons 3 Charlton Athletic 0

Put away the bunting, cancel the open top bus. You win nothing with kids.

With Lee Bowyer sat in the stands leaving managerial matters to Jason Euell and Johnnie Jackson, Charlton’s academy team unsurprisingly bowed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.

There were five debutants during the course of the game. Defender Ryan Blumburg (20) and midfielder Ben Dempsey (18) were given starts and brought on in the 2nd half were defenders Kenneth Yao (19), Alfie Doughty (18) and the much talked about at Sparrows Lane, Brendan Sarpong Wiredu (18), who replaced Albie Morgan (18) in midfield. Morgan and Taylor Maloney (19) both started for the first XI for the first time.

Jo Cummings (19) who played a Checkertrade match last season joined the Aussie Blumberg and Anfernee Dijksteel (21) in a three-man defence with Catford born Jamie Mascoll (21) and Mark Marshall used as wing back, but the youngsters were given a torrid first quarter of an hour and were 0-2 down with the tie effectively over.

The 2nd half we were better and the Charlton youths dominated for spells. We supposedly should have had a penalty and Hackett-Fairchild (20) looked lively up front but a Cummings own goal gave MK a third and final goal.

The biggest disappointment was another blank game for Nicky Ajose, who you’d hope would shine in these sort of games. Afterward Jacko talked of adding a loan signing before the weekend.

Addicks at Stadium mk: Louis Mendez.
Jacko: “It’s a tough one for them, we’ve given them a pat on the back for their efforts, but we’re out of the cup and some of them might not get another opportunity for a little while. They have a lot to learn from it.”

As you say you win nothing with kids, but you can with the right balance of youth and experience.
Several of last night’s team need more time others will not make the grade. Dijksteel Morgan and Lapslie are worthy of first team squad status. Hackett Fairchild appears to be improving and may breakthrough this season. Sarpong Wiredu ,Dempsey and Doughty could be worthy next season. But we do lack promising defensive players in the U23s.
I was able to follow todays U23s game at Crewe on their twitter site (nothing on CAFCs site) result was a 1-1 draw which is reasonable in view of players missing because of last nights game,Several new names on the teamsheet let’s hope they are good prospects.

    • I was hoping you’d comment rierti. We’d love it wouldn’t we if this team could go on and be a success with a backbone of Pearce, Pratley and Taylor but supported by the excitement of our young players like Morgan, Lapslie and Grant.

No mention of Blumburg there. Without putting you on the spot. Who do you rate and what would be their level, i.e are we talking Gomez or Lennon or Parker or Wagstaff?

And which ones will not make it?
