Regan Charles-Cook leaves for Gills
Regan Charles-Cook had fallen behind in the pecking order last season and has left on a free transfer to Gillingham after the midfielder turned down the offer of a one-year extension to his current Charlton contract, which the club actually announced he had signed.
Charles-Cook has spent previous season’s on loan in the National League at Solihull Moors and Woking. The 21-year old came from Arsenal to Charlton’s academy in 2013 and at one time it looked as he would become a regular feature in the first team squad but his loan spells away from SE7 hindered and not helped his Valley career. He made 9 first-team appearances and scored with a accomplished finish in League Cup victory at Exeter City last August.
He definitely doesn’t have the phsicality of Konsa, Aribo or even Dijksteel and more disappointing is that his departure reduces the number of double barreled players in the squad to just four.
RCC is a player who may make an impression at the Gills. I have not seen him play for some time but he can play wingback or wide midfield so could be handy as a squad player as he covers 4 positions .Woking did well in the early part of last season notably in the FA cup their form dropped dramatically after he was injured in December culminating in relegation.
However, the main reason I am replying to your blog is concern that no mention has been made of Willis and Sarpong-Wiredu in the list of last years U18s signed to play for the U23s. They were the two top scoring players for the U18s. Have they left for pastures new because they have had better offers elsewhere and because of the protracted takeover situation and the consequent uncertainty?. I particularly liked Sarpong-Wiredu when he switched to the number 10 role for the last 3 months of the season, There has also been paper speculation linking U16 Sarmiento with a big money move to Manchester City. Are we losing 3 promising forwards in one go?
Glad to hear that Brendan Sarpong Wiredu has signed pro contract. I think it will prove a good move for him and the club.
Totally agree rierti.
