Chris Powell sacked by Huddersfield

Huddersfield became the 5th Championship club this season to rid themselves of their manager this morning when they showed Chris Powell and Alex Dyer the door, this after a respectful 2-2 draw away at Reading last night.

Powell was appointed last September and I think has done well to operate within very tight budgetary restraints. He had, unlike us, used the loan market well and Town currently have 5 more points than Charlton with little investment and the Terriers best players sold from underneath him. Sounds familiar.

Charlton’s owners have often talked of having a bottom three budget in The Championship but I would have to think that Huddersfield’s was lower but Powell’s sacking shows the pressure that nearly all the clubs put on their managers to not only survive in the toughest of all divisions but to actually succeed.

Powell will want to get back to work and after pretty much spending his whole playing, coaching and managerial career in either the East Midlands or Greater London now finds himself on the managerial circuit having to decide to bide his time or take the next opportunity that comes up.

Powell has a traditional view of how to manage a club especially with Jim Smith, Peter Taylor, Nigel Pearson and Alan Curbishley as role models. Like at Charlton under Roland Duchâtelet, Powell appears to have disagreed with the future coaching and managerial approach Huddersfield want to take and has fallen on his sword.
