The Church of Wales
February 23rd, 2000. Wales were out in Qatar, helping trying to establish the game in this oil-rich land. Wales won the friendly game 1-0. A certain John Robinson was the scorer, his 3rd and final goal for the Welsh National Team.
Tonight over 13 years later in Cardiff the Addicks’ Simon Church scored with a sweet finish to give Wales a 1-0 win over Macadonia in their final home World Cup qualifier.
Churchy, who had been on the bench for the last couple of games, partnered Craig Bellamy up front for the injury-hit Welsh side looking for a morale boosting win for boss Chris Coleman.
It was Bellamy’s last game in a Welsh shirt in the Land of our Fathers and according to reports he and Church played excellently together and they will take that confidence to Belgium on Tuesday. More importantly for Addicks hopefully Simon’s tail will still be up for next Saturday’s game at Blackburn.
There was a time, not that long ago, when almost the whole Charlton squad would travel for international commitments, and it is pleasing to see Church get his opportunity tonight with Rhoys Wiggins on the bench. A shout-out too for Morgan Fox who gained another Welsh Under 21 cap tonight.
So, a Friday night poser. Who was the last Charlton player to score an international goal?

my son’s quick fire response was Fuller CA; I’m not going to check on Google yet!
We flicked over to the Wales game a few times and saw a glorious header from Church well saved by the keeper.
Pembury Addick
PA – to clarify, last Charlton player to score an international goal whilst playing for Charlton.
