Castle Harbour
Happy Father’s Day Dads.
Whilst we have to celebrate two different Mother’s Days, because it falls on a completely different day here and in the U.S., I only get to revel in one. Once actually we were in Mexico and we had to get wrapped up in their Mother’s Day celebrations too as that was also incommensurable. Bloody expensive that year.
Anyway, I had a lovely day today as the three of us hired a little motor boat and cruised around the very scenic Castle Harbour at the north-east end of the island.
The harbour has a lot to see and there are many small islands including Nonsuch that is an important conservation site and large rock formations to explore plus a couple of beautiful sandy coves as well and St David’s Lighthouse. We got close enough to almost nose in the windows at some of the immense real estate at Tuckers Town, and nothing excites my 3-year old more than the sight of a jumbo jet taking off which they did at the airport to the north of the harbour. Originally a U.S. Army airbase, it has long been Bermuda’s International Airport after numerous islands were levelled and waterways were landfilled in the early 1940’s.
Then pride of place goes to the harbour’s many fortifications, some of which are the oldest remaining in the English New World and are worth exploring from the water and the land.
Afterwards we had a swim and lunch and by a quirk of fate, or the Bermudian Government or someone, tomorrow is National Heroes Day and a public holiday so we get to do it all over again.
Whilst typing this I have been distracted by the U.S. Open, which I was at on Thursday, and a great day just became greater watching as Justin Rose became the first Englishman to win a major in over 15 years at the beautiful Merion Golf Club. I can even sort of say I was there!
