Kites and cakes

Flying kites in Bermuda is a long held tradition began apparently by a teacher who made a cross kite and set it flying from a hilltop. The teacher then cut the string and the students watched it sail upward towards the sky copying Jesus’ ascension to heaven.

Every Easter adults and kids alike make kites using sticks, coloured paper and glue. Ours however came in plastic wrapping with some simple instructions!

All over the Easter weekend although especially Good Friday you can see kites flying across Bermuda’s skies and we spent Friday flying ours outside along with friends followed by the kids watching Hop and then dinner.

Another Easter tradition here is a meal of potato and cod fishcakes crammed in between a hot cross bun served with tartare or hot sauce. Salted cod has long been a staple here, originally given to the slaves and long part of goods traded with Nova Scotia. I had a couple of those yesterday washed down with a few, stiff bloody mary’s as my daughter ran around with her basket searching for chocolate eggs.

A nice long weekend and now the sun has arrived hopefully banishing what for Bermuda has been a very cold early spring.
