Charlton Athletic 0 Huddersfield 1

Our cup run runneth over. My, that sounded awful on the radio, although a mate at the game said it was worse than that. We really must have one of the worst cup records in the country.

More disturbing is our home form, and that is now just 3 wins in 15 Valley games this season. Today was a perfect platform to turn a corner, build on the excellent win at Watford and get our name in the hat with a chance of a plum tie, but, nope.

Despondently a 6,000 crowd and rows and rows of empty red seats told a story of Addicks fan’s expectations today and they weren’t let down.

At least we weren’t one of the upsets and our match report will be well hidden in tomorrow’s sports pages. Conference side Luton beat Wolves and unsurprisingly Stale Solbakken was sacked afterwards.

Ok, I’ll say it…. now we can concentrate on the league.

Addick Bloggers at a gloomy Valley: Drinking During the Game; Blackheath Addick; Stickleback;
Powell-ometer: The side he put out should have been good enough to win the game. Squad players came in (Button) aside and didn’t impress and after that Powell still doesn’t know how good some of the youngsters are on the big stage.
Elsewhere: Championship runaway leaders Cardiff lost at Macclesfield, although the Welshman can hand on heart say they’re now concentrating on the league. Wolves lost at Luton which saw Stale Solbakken sacked, Hull were held by Leyton Orient at home and Forest lost at home to struggling Oldham. Wednesday drew 0-0 at home to MK, Blackburn made it 3 out of 3 for Gary Bowyer beating Bristol City, Derby thrashed League One leaders Tranmere 5-0 and Millwall beat Preston. Palace and Stoke will replay as will Leeds and Birmingham and Blackpool, Fulham. Leicester and Middlesbrough came through two banana skins against Burton and the lowest-placed side left in, Hastings respectively. Brighton claimed a Premier League scalp comfortably beating Alan Pardew’s Newcastle 2-0.

    Well I did say so did I not, Why we thought we could put out a weakened team, against a side that was in the same division last year, was i think a mistake.It was a mistake because the fans expect the team to perform at every game, not a ‘pick and mix’….. That is the whole point of a cup match, you play against weaker and stronger sides, but you play to win?
    Perhaps some of these players should consider there professionalism, my team today played on a muddy park pitch, paid for the privledge, and lost. They do it for the love of the game, it was the first game they lost this season, against a better side, but they fought, and battled, and gave there best. There best was not good enough, but I hope the players at CAFC reflect on there performance, because maybe a few might be playing on a park pitch in the near future?

    Ken – I think the fact that only 6k came showed what the fans expected. Personally I thought Powell’s team wasn’t that weakened but his selection again had a look of not knowing who are hs best players in their best positions. In hindsight I would’ve gone with a mix of experience – Morrison, Jackson, BWP and youth – Fox, Harriot and Azeez.

    Mind you I called last week on an experienced team to win the game. Perhaps the U18’s would have shown more desire?

    Bob – I switched between the Huddersfield and CAFC commentary to keep me sane.
