Charlton Athletic 2 Leicester City 1

The Valley for night games has been a bit of a drag in recent years, but tonight back in the Championship playing a team with real Premier League intentions the glorious old stadium was rocking to the tune of proud Addicks willing and cheering their team onto a fantastic victory under the lights.

I think that we saw the real the difference between League One and The Championship tonight. Leicester are a good team, with good players and a very strong bench. Yet our strikers, on the night were more clinical, including one man, super Yann Kermorgant. I would have given anything to see the Breton clasp his finger to his lips after he scored.

From eye witnesses, including my breathless mate after the game, the back five were outstanding. Morrison is already shining at this level and Hamer is sounding much more assured. I wonder if his eye surgeon will get to any games?

Almost unanimously BWP won the vote for man of the match. This is a really important season for BWP, a player who got lost on his way down the leagues, but now as part of this close knit team he’s rekindled his career and found a manager and fans that believe in him. He needs to improve but at 27 still has time and by all accounts his endurance and determination tonight underscored the whole team’s performance.

I am still waiting for my first game this season but if all goes to plan I will be at Forest. I have a real soft spot for this team, a real connection. Early days for sure but unless anyone has yet to notice Charlton are back.

At half time Ricardo Fuller was introduced the crowd. Powell has taken his time over this one and a one-year deal doesn’t appear too much of a gamble. Fuller played 3 trial games for us in 2001 scoring 5 goals. I hear he needs a bit of pre-season work, but in this division Fuller could be the wily old head that we will need, like Jason Roberts was for Reading last season.

Interesting to see that Fuller was signed after Hayes came off the payroll. Sam Baldock also left West Ham for Bristol City today. The fee was said to be £1.1m, and currently out of our range although it is said that The Valley was his preferred destination.

If we can move Leon Clarke on, then I can see a midfielder coming in too.

Powell-ometer: All about team is Powell, refused to get drawn into the Yann, Morro and Pearson as his mentor sub-plot, but but he would have gone to bed tonight with a bloody big smile on his face.
Elsewhere: Blackpool won their 2nd game coming from behind to beat Leeds 2-1, Wednesday beat Birmingham 3-2 with new signing Rodri getting on the sheet, Michael Chopra got Ipswich’s winner at Watford and Wolves beat Barnsley giving Stale Solbakken his first win. Huddersfield and Forest shared the points as did Brighton and Cardiff. Palace were walloped at Ashton Gate but Millwall won at Peterborough Bolton were 2-0 winners over Derby and Boro beat Burnley 3-2 with Nicky Bailey getting their first.

When a whole stadium screams with delight when a full back goes on a run and loses the ball you know its been a good night. The only thing better would have been a penalty at the Leicester end for Yann to chip. Just when I thought my love of football was waning…
