Reasons to be cheerful

…. And breath.

I’ve spent a lot of this week pouring though record books to see when was the last time we were 0-4 down at half-time at The Valley, well that and having a few bets on the Cheltenham Races. Overall both exercises have been quite depressing.

Reminding myself of old thrashings was not good for my state of mind, and I never did find out if we have ever been 0-4 down at The Valley before at the break. If anyone knows, please put me out of my misery.

We were back in the 1983/84 season 0-5 down at Brighton at half-time. I remember Peter ‘Scoop’ Burrows LBC half-time report like it was yesterday. It ended 0-7 for those too young to remember.

I thought I would take me mind of Charlton yesterday and focus on the Cheltenham Festival. I was all over Arabella Boy as it is my daughter’s name but she was replaced late in the day by trainer Enda Bolger with the equally well regarded Garde Champetre. Sadly he pulled up in between fences during the Cross-Country Chase and was sadly put down.

Anyway, today was a new day and to cheer myself up I took a look at the league table. Not so bad after all eh?

I have a childhood memory of losing 5-0 at home to Leicester at the Valley in 1970 or thereabouts. I think it may have been 4-0 at half time. A “courageous’ decision to play Mike Kenning at left back badly backfired and I’m afraid that Charlie Wright didn’t have the happiest of games.

Isn’t Boy a rather unusual middle name for a girl? 😉

Plough Lane on a crisp Boxing Day morning in the late 80’s – i remember being 3-0 down after about twenty minutes and then having to climb over a wall to get out early …. didn’t even make half time, they were so dire.

I was at Brighton and I remember their fans looking at us in wonder as we continued to sing – there wasn’t much choice as you couldn’t get out. The players had to clap us at the end. Funny how the mind plays tricks – I always think we scored 1 that day.
Leeds at home wasn’t good was it? And I also recall being at Norwich for a big defeat and arguing with a policeman when I wanted to leave 10 minutes early (in the days when they put you in a cage). Obviously I was going to go on a 1-woman rampage. God knows what year.

Having been at the Norwich – Man Utd “game” in the late 70’s when the Utd fans got on top of the stand and started hurling sheet asbestos onto the crowd below, the cages were well justified for some “fans”. I think every car and house window on the way back to the railway station was broken. Great times eh?

Scoop is best remembered by many for the ” Charlton are back in it ! ” comment when about 6-0 down to Luton at Kenilworth in about 1977.
A nice guy still to be seen in The Valley Cafe before many games.

Scoop was a very familiar voice in our living room every other winter Saturday growing up as a kid. During those years (late 70’s, early to mid 80’s before I started going to a lot more away games) we rarely ever won away did we?
