AFC Bournemouth 0 Charlton Athletic 1

Back from a great weekend in Bournemouth where the match, if not the end result and pre and post game, has been consigned to memory.

It was a pretty dismal affair if I’m honest with Bournemouth edging it but a goalless draw probably the right result. This Charlton team however does not know when it is over.

A number of players were not on their game yesterday but the back five were strong again, although Wiggins struggled a little back on his old patch getting booed every time he got near the ball.

I don’t remember Hamer being unduly troubled, nor Sullivan when he took his place although ex-Addick Harry Arter put a low effort just wide as the clock moved to 90.

Then right at the death we won a corner. All around me and opposite Addicks raised their voices for one last chance. Green swung the corner in, Haynes flicked the ball further into the box and it was Kermorgant who headed goal bound and as a couple of Bournemouth players attempted to keep the ball out they were clearly behind the goal line and the linesman, who was getting a bit of stick earlier, signalled for the goal.

Cue absolute bedlam.

Those injury times minutes at Bournemouth, Bramall Lane and Bury were another counterplot in the book of this season which has been unimaginable for Addicks fans.

The joyous scenes at the final whistle yesterday were not just of revelry but those of a heightening belief of how this season will end. It was fantastic to be a part of it and my son absolutely loved it.

We drove down on Saturday morning after a strong coffee at Gatwick and I had booked us a hotel room so it prevented more driving, allowed me a couple of pints and gave us some quality father and son time. Dave was an excellent accomplice and even the sun came out on a game and a team that we will be talking about for many years to come.

Powell-ometer: I watched him throughout the game as he trawled his area, a figure of calm. I am sure he was thinking that taking home a goal less draw was a decent point before that injury time corner.
Elsewhere: if you were sat at home in from of the vidi-printer, those injury time minutes were maybe season defining. Sheffield United were 2-up at half-time against Oldham, but Shefki Kuqi converted an injury time penalty to give the Latics a dramatic win. Huddersfield threw away a two goal lead last week and were 3-up at Bury within half an hour yet allowed Bury to grab a point equalising in injury time through Ashley Eastham. Wednesday without Gary Megson were held 0-0 at Rochdale, Stevenage drew at Exeter and MKD at Hartlepool. Finally Les Parry was sacked after Tranmere were beaten at Fellow strugglers Chesterfield.

Delighted you and your son enjoyed the game CA. Sometimes the previous 90 minutes of dross make that last minute winner even sweeter!

We couldn’t go – our boys team had a game in “sunny” Uckfield in the morning. So we saw Dartford beat Tonbridge away instead. Damn good sing song, but a very poor game. Dartford also lost their keeper (Louis Wells) and both he and the replacement (Deren Ibrahim) had excellent games.

After the game the Dartford players were also absolutely overjoyed – catching Woking is starting to look really possible.

Dartford also scored four in a mid week game as well – and they like Chartlon were probably a bit cream crackered!

Another parallel is the debate on the Dartford blog about the poor quality of play on Saturday.

Addicks have a very effective, functional side this season. Its not always pretty, but I would rather that than play freeflowing Barcelona style and not going up. Hughesie had a good piece in the Rochdale programme about his promotions with Reading and Leeds, and his take on that experience is “whatever it takes”.

And I’ll happily take whatever the Addicks and the Darts do to go up – even if its ugly! These are such good times and I am really making the most of them.
