Gombey Warriors win
In front of 3,000 fans Bermuda beat Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 on Friday night to record a famous victory. Second half goals from Antwan Russell and the excellent Bradford City’s Nahki Wells (who I mentioned the other day hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for some while) helped them to a 2-1 win over the Soca Warriors.
T&T’s Kevin Molina pulled one back for Trinidad in the last 10 minutes following a messy goalmouth scramble leading to a tense finale, but the Gombey’s deserved their victory, which ranks alongside the best in their history. T&T qualified for the 2006 Germany World Cup.
One little embarrassment for the Bermudian FA was the stadium playing the American National Anthem instead of God Save the Queen before the game. An interesting mistake!
Now on Tuesday group leaders Guyana play at the National Sports Centre in another game that Bermuda must win. Guyana won in Barbados 2-0 on Friday night, in a game that featured Leon Cort, who I hope plays again in Bermuda on Tuesday.
