Charlton Athletic 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Disappointing last night especially after such as wonderful start (which I missed).

After the 15th minute I managed to watch the game on a decent internet feed and for the rest of the half we were on top and trying to get the ball down at every opportunity.

In the 2nd half Wednesday, with Semedo pivotal, won the midfield battle and it was frustrating to watch us too often rely on the long ball down the big throats of the Wednesday backs. Hamer I thought also was culpable sending every goal kick long and refusing to send willing full backs away with an early throw. And whilst on the subject of throws. Please, enough of the ‘Stoke long throw game.’ Yes, use it as one of our weapons but not from every blimmin’ throw-in!

Whilst our back four were rarely troubled as soon as I saw Clinton bloody Morrison on the touchline, those of us with long memories would have feared the worse and sure enough the concerns were soon realised as again we conceded from a set-piece.

Mind you, Wednesday never threatened again and only had two attempts at goal all game. All the same, we also didn’t look capable in that 2nd half of getting a winner and the game petered out into a draw.

We look desperately short of another goal threat from the 5-man bench. Benson I assume is still out with his finger and Green was ill, but Euell is not going to come on with 12 minutes left and grab a winner out of nothing. I would have preferred to have seen Pritchard for Stephens, whose head was spinning from one side to the other as the ball whizzed over his head in the 2nd period.

Likewise Bover would be a useful addition to a game like last night’s as long as we can be more patient in our play. Maybe Saturday would be a good time to make some changes to the starting 16.

All in all, a draw is not the end of this world, albeit disappointing. We remain unbeaten with a long way to go and The Valley crowd appeared to remain upbeat even at the end.

Oh, and how about a bit of karma for Gary Megson, who after making 3 substitutions in the JPT last week in the first 15 minutes lost 3 players to injury last night?

Powell-ometer: Again I would’ve liked to have seen some earlier changes. No one knows what is going on in Powell’s head while he is stood on the touchline but he needs to more assertive with his team changes.

Agree with your thoughts…I was able to watch the entire game online and as soon as we started going for the long ball, we lost the cohesion and magic…When we pass and build, we look great..The big hoof fails every time…I think My P will coach it out of them!.

Still, a much, much better team than last year!

You may be correct JC. But anyone tuning in last night may not agree.

Thing is, is that Powell is still learning and we are all watching him learn.

I don’t expect that Powell told the players at half time to go out and start launching it but they lost patience, particularly the back 5, and did.

What Powell should have done is change it earlier and made changes and sent instructions that stopped us hoofing it.

I have only watched two live games now and it is a better team than last year though by miles.
