New away kit

I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to football shirts, whilst others got all excited about Charlton playing in purple and green stripes or all black, I yearned for the simple reversal of our home colours when we travelled away from home – good old white shirts and red shorts. Well I got my wish and I like it.

I’ve been impressed with Macron’s stuff so far and it’s been ten years since we last wore white and red away from home, oh I can see Graham Stuart now making a darting late run into the box to meet a Danny Green peach of a cross!

CA, as you well know, in North America, sports teams stick to their official colours on all uniforms, home and away. I have never been able to figure out why football clubs pick any old colour, year-to-year, for their away kit. I struggle to understand how teams with nicknames like “The Reds” end up in yellow shirts or whatever. So, having said all that, I share your appreciation of Charlton doing a red/white reversal home and away. Interesting that you should single out one of my all-time favourite Charlton players, Graham Stuart, who, while not spectacular, was a fine leader with great savvy on the pitch.

yeah i like what i see. it immediately reminded me of an old photo of eddie firmani, in action, in a white shirt with red across the shoulders only, like epaulettes, very smart?

Im loving it too, but why they didnt go the whole hog and replicate the 64-66 and really clean up, I dont know. We did have a white shirt in 05/06 and again in 07/08…Im assuming youre speaking of the 2002 Redbus kit?

Yes the Redbus one had red shorts whereas the other two had black shorts. But you are right Tel, although I really like this new away kit, if they had gone with the 60’s shirt with the red shoulders that would have been really neat.

A few kits stand out in the now 50 odd Ive collected….I have to say the quality of that Redbus kit is outstanding. We have had a few nice white strips over the years, but my favourite was the 95 “Germany” Kit with the red and black bands across the chest. When I was on the FF we encouraged the club to try and replicate the 64/66 shirt, but it obviously fell on deaf ears…I have to say the three blue kits have been successful, the Seahawk Blue and Denim achieveing the best sales ever for an away kit.

Tel, 50 shirts is impressive. I reckon between me and my brother we have had that many thrown away. Shame. In regard to the best selling. I think the more mature of us prefer the traditional look, but we are less likely to buy/wear the shirt. Kids/young adults mind you probably prefer the trendier more casual look of the blue, or purple, or green, or seahawk denim and are more likely to buy it, or get their parents too anyhow 😉
