The very first edition of the Voice of the Valley from February 1988. The whole edition can be read here. Somewhere in the abyss of my parents loft lives a whole collection of VOTV’s except for a couple that I have in a box under my desk at work that made the journey to Chicago and then Bermuda with hundreds of significant (to me) programmes that I rescued from my ex-wife.
That editorial written by Rick Everitt is enough to give you goosebumps and it’s why on my sadly infrequent visits that despite some of the dross that has been served up in recent years my hearts still beats a little faster when The Valley comes into view on Charlton Lane.
With thanks to Charlton Life.

Stirring words indeed CA. I’d forgotten what a great and poetic writer Rick was. Having just turned 40 and just begun both blogging about Londons greatest team to wear red shirts and beginning to realise that primal scream, the happy Monday’s, stone roses, decent and honest episodes of only fools and horses, sky tv only showing Scottish football (which only my cousin had access to anyway), and life seemingly being a lot more simple is now closer to Charltons excel from the Valley, and my birth and WW2! Actually my maths are wrong, must be a mid life crisis thing! Still, how far have we come as a club. Things ain’t too great right now, but when recall the journey to Sainsburys Norwood and The Boylyn, it could be a he’ll of anlot worth. Long live Messrs Alwin, Murray and Simmons.
