New Official Site

It was quite apt that on the day we remembered fallen heroes Charlton Athletic’s Official site ceased to be independent and moved over to the cookie-cutter FLi stable.
I had been wondering when the switch over was going to happen as the move was announced in the summer. Like many others I was bitterly disappointed at losing our identity but accepted that it was financially the right decision and more importantly it meant that two excellent club employees were retained.
Nonetheless it saddened me clicking on cafc.co.uk yesterday. The club was one of the first to have an ‘official site’ back in 1995, even though at first it wasn’t very official. For sure in recent years cafc.co.uk did start to look very tatty and threadbare, but like a favourite jumper it stored great memories and was ours.
No doubt I will get used to the advert and link laden new FLi site, and I hope it still allows Matt Wright, Gary Haines and Tom Harvey some creativity. However if it starts to become like the monotone, impersonal daily bulletin I will be giving it a miss.
Tomorrow the Addicks travel to Peterborough. I was at the 1993 game when Garry Nelson got the winner and it doesn’t sound as if the away end has changed much in 17 years. We have an old Chicago friend staying with us tonight and the chances of her wanting to sit on the sofa and listen to Emma from Radio London in the morning are slim to none. Enjoy the game those that are going.
The new website is heavily dependent on Adobe Flash so of course does not work on an iPhone. What a pity. I’d got pretty used to the old site even though the match section always crashed the Safari iPhone browser. At least I was able to read the news but now I won’t bother until I’m near a computer. I’ll just read you and New York Addick instead!
I take it back. There is a mobile version that is quite useful.
My first visit was tonight, after I knew the score! I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to the adverts, but I’ll have to work around them somehow. I do prefer our own version, but understand the economics of not being able to continue with it.
Going back to that score….that’s the boys! A month to shake hands and say hi, then a month to find which foot is which…and then a month of… I think this season might have it’s upside!
