Parky’s days numbered

Charlton Athletic 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 4
All week I was trying to buy into the concept of us improving against better opposition. We needed to looking at our approaching fixtures. New York Addick’s preview on Friday suggested that our league position might have flattered us considering the opposition played so far.

Today we came up against worthy promotion candidates and the performance and final result was both embarrassing and shocking.

Brighton completely outplayed us today and not for the first time Parkinson showed to be tactically inept when up against a better manager. 3,000-odd Brighton fans celebrated noisily and will head back to the south-coast dreaming of good times ahead and rightly so. For us we face more woe and our suffering shows no signs of ending.

I have wanted Phil Parkinson to be successful I really have. He does have something ‘Charlton’ about him and I admire his honesty and unquestionable hard work. But he is not good enough for this club.

In all honesty despite fantastic support from Richard Murray, Parky has never been far away from talk of the sack. Some were never convinced, others like me wanted to be but as the club continues on an unending downward curve I think Parky might be gone by the end of the month.

CA fact: Our worst home defeat since Man Utd beat us 4-0 in May 2005. In more ways than one, that seems an awfully long time ago.

I think Parky will be here to the end of the season – and we won’t be relegated. This side has enough in them to get a mid-table position.

    • I’m with KH below Wyn. This club should have one ambition, and one ambition only. If that is having the ability to finish midtable in the 3rd Division then that is a shocking indictment of how far we have fallen.

The problem with that Wyn is that without promotion we will face even more savage cuts next summer and another significant reduction in our active supprter base.

That is just not good enough for our club.

It is also likely to lead to a relegation and/or administration. This is why Parky was allowed to run a wage bill that is £3m over income (ignoring the wages of the three big earners) and spend a further £300k plus on transfers.

Anything short of promotion is a disaster and for that reason if mid table (or just avoiding relegation) is the likely outcome he shouldn’t be allowed to see the season out.

I don’t know about you, but I was still optimistic at half time. How stupid. Time to get the head out of the sand and stop pretending this is all OK – it isn’t. I have never, in 40+ years left a game early, but I couldn’t stomach any more and wrestled the front door keys off him indoors as the 3rd goal hit the back of the net. Cowardly I know but the sight of yet more away fans having a party at the valley was too much for flesh and blood. I would never say I won’t be back, but I’m glad we’re on holiday for the next game, and I’m taking my Peterboro away tickets back on Monday for a refund. That should give me a nice break. Sorry Parky – I’ve tried, I really have, but please have the good grace to go with some dignity.

    • Pat, if Parky and his players have lost people like you then we are in a very sorry state indeed.

I haven’t seen as many comments on Charlton blogs for a long while CA. It rather confirms that this game was a watershed for many.

I don’t mind losing – but this was embarrasing. Way before the second went in we were being comprehensively outplayed. we didn’t just lose at home 4-0 in Div 3, we were completely outclassed. The previous stuttering performances were finally given context – we aren’t a team that is about to explode in form. We are a team that is about to implode.

A further context is Poyet – taking a group of non descript players and putting on one of the best footballing shows I have seen at the Valley. What has Phil provided in the meantime?

When we were passing the ball about in the early stages of last season we got tumbled after a while and stopped. why didn’t we learn the lessons and reapply with our now more “combatitive” players?

We’ll feel the scars of this one for some time to come.
