Carlisle United 0 Charlton Athletic 1

I am not embarrassed to say that I had tears on my cheeks this afternoon when the final whistle had finally blown at Colchester and our promotion to the Championship had sunken in. This football club can put you through the ringer but these golden moments are to be treasured.

When I watched on Sky Sports News Charlton fans spilling onto the pitch at the final whistle I was so chuffed for those that took the gamble to travel the length of the country to give the players the encouragement. Brunton Park has further still become a massive part of the club’s history. Incredible isn’t it?

It was 1981 and 1986 all over again as fan’s jumped around on the pitch hugging any player and each other in sight, and the players and management celebrated wildly 350-odd miles away from home in front of them.

This morning after late last night receiving a confidence inducing message from Dave, I had a good feeling about what might unravel today in Carlisle, and good it bloody well was.

Both Sheffield clubs were losing early, and although we struggled to assert ourselves on the game in the 1st half, as the 2nd rolled on it sounded as if we were getting closer and closer to that vastly important goal, and then it came via BWP with 14 minutes remaining.

Those final 14 minutes (plus 4 added) seemed like 14 hours as I covered every inch of our house stomping around with my nerve endings singed until finally confirmation came through that Wednesday had been held. Thank god I have only just found out that Wednesday had a goal disallowed in injury time, I’m not sure if I could have coped with that!

My 4th promotion in 37-years of supporting the club from near and far, and every one as precious as the other. What a fantastic season, and I am so proud of each and every one of the players and of course Chris Powell and his team for giving us our Charlton back.

CHARLTON ARE BACK!

Proud Addicks at Brunton Park: Doctor Kish; Drinking During the Game; Ramblings of a Football Fan; Blackheath Addick.
Powell-ometer: With tears in his eyes at the final whistle, the love for this man is overwhelming.
Elsewhere: All important of course was Wednesday being held by Colchester (thank you) despite Migel Angel Llera’s 3rd goal in 3 games. The Blades won again, despite being behind to a Kevin Lisbie goal, winning 3-1. Huddersfield lost at Preston and have now been overtaken by MK Dons, who won comfortably at Scunthorpe. Brentford and Notts County were goalless in the big play-off chasing clash, Chesterfield won again and Rochdale beat Exeter but all three look doomed.

Need to check your history or maybe mathematics! 37 years takes us back to 1975, incidentally exactly the time since I’ve been Addickted. We’ve had 3 promotions to the top flight and now 2 to the second tier since then. But what the hell, great day yesterday and proud to say I was there with my lad whose first promotion it is. COYR!!!!

Unfortunately not Gary. 37 season’s, my first was 1975/76, the season after we won promotion From the 3rd. My Dad first took me that season so I missed the promotion party from the 74/75 season. Hopefully we gain some more fans next season in the same way!

Great day for you and your son yesterday, he must have loved it.

It sunk in for me about 8.30 last night CA, when I had a little tear or two. I normally do the stomping round the house routine but did the rabbit in headlight in front of telly instead.

A little part of me regretted it being settled up there – I was due to go but one of boys’ football coaches had to work which meant I had to manage instead (the league won’t let us postpone for such flimsy reasons! we’d have conceded 3 points). We won 7-4 and have a chance of the divisional title next week. Bit uncharitable but I’d have sdwapped that chance to be at Carlisle.

We go to Preston in a fortnight, so if we win the title in our last three games i’m gonna be there come what may! Didn’t we secure promotion against Preston at home in 75? Another bit of symmetry..
