Wembley woes

Growing up in Catford, Bromley FC was just about my nearest non-League football club, and I would often spend some idle Saturday afternoon’s or Tuesday evenings’s at Hayes Lane with mates.

In those days they knocked around the Isthmian Leagues but for the last few years have been playing at National League level and today were joined by 17,000 fans (photo) at Wembley to watch them play Brackley Town in the FA Trophy Final.

It was all going swimmingly for Bromley leading their National League North rivals 1-0 with injury time minutes ticking when on loan Addick Brandon Hanlan missed a great chance. I was following online and thought we’ve seen this before and sure enough that polite human Roger Johnson deflected into his own net, which was probably the fans fault, in the 94th minute to salvage an equalizer for Brackley and take the game into extra time.

Baggy trousers

I didn’t really want to give this more oxygen, but the club have made it newsworthy.

Charlton have made a statement following the video The Sun released yesterday showing current and former Charlton players in various state of drunkenness and abusing Northern Irish team mates Mikhail Kennedy and Josh Magennis. If you want to, you can see the video here but be aware the language is shocking and Mother’s favourite Chris Solly you will never look at again in the same way.

Blades bid for Holmes

So, who is confident that Ricky Holmes will still be at The Valley next season?

The South London Press “has been told that Charlton have received an offer but made it clear they have no intention of parting with the attacker, who won the Player of the Year award.” I think we have seen this movie before..

Losing Holmes would be a hammer blow to Addicks and Karl Robinson. Last summer the club did resist offers for Ademola Lookman, before eventually cashing in on him in January, but any bid for Holmes would likely represent a large premium on the £125,000 we paid Northampton. Charlton have offered Holmes an extension to his contract which expires in 2018 but at this stage in his career, you would hardly blame Holmes for moving up a division to work with a manager he knows well.

Poyet to return

Still buzzing today following the incredible coming together of Addicks and the subsequent media coverage of yesterday’s protests against the owners and his puppet administration. The unity of fans, young and old, makes me proud and confident that we will achieve our goal of removing Meire and forcing Duchatelet into putting the club up for sale.

There of course is much work, planning and effort to put in but we must never waiver from our purpose. These demonstrations will get bigger and louder and there are some imaginative and very achievable ideas being proposed amongst the support, none less that taking our aims to Belgium and embarrassing the owner on his doorstep.

15 players released

Part one of Luzon/Duchatelet/Meire’s summer transfer strategy was executed today with the announcement of 15 players released.

They are: Tal Ben Haim; Simon Church; Chris Eagles; Roger Johnson; Lawrie Wilson; Oguchi Onyewu; Neil Etheridge; Jack Munns; Harry Osborne; Harry Gerard; Kadell Daniel; Kurtis Cumberbatch; Kieran Monlouis; Rhys Browne; Levander Pyke.

A mixture of the unfortunate attrition of young pros who were unable to step up plus 7 first teamers. My only disappointment is seeing Ben Haim go, although it was apparently his own decision. Not so much disappointed but sad to see Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church move on.

The Welshman scored just 10 goals in Charlton colours, but his work rate could never be questioned, but I expect his career will have to continue down a division.

Lawrie Wilson’s form dipped this season after an excellent 2014/15 season, when I personally thought he was player of the year. He was very friendly with Hamer, Morrison, Hughes and Jackson and an integral part of Chris Powell’s squad but he was sidelined under both Peeters and Luzon and the writing was on the wall. However I am pleased that he was able to come back to the club where he began his career to show us what a great pro he is. Best of luck Lawrie.

Drum roll…. Roger Johnson!

No new deadline beating signings down at The Valley, oh no, not even a washed up old network jolly that no one else wants.

Who knows what Roly promised Guy Luzon, except for a job at a future date at Újpest, but Luzon said on Saturday that he was anticipating on bringing in two more players, yet we know he has as much clout as Harvey the mascot.

The club stated in September that they would add to the squad if we were still in the play-off race in January. In fact, because of the paper thin quality of the squad, and poor management decisions, we are now in a relegation battle. Meire and Duchatelet have had at least since New Year’s Day to work on additions and what have we got.
