Holmes gone. Money not to be reinvested

As expected Ricky Holmes was unveiled as a Sheffield United player today. The fee was undisclosed bu5 reckoned of be no more than £400,000. Richard Murray, remember hump?, said that due to takeover talks the money will not be reinvested in the team, but Holmes wages will, meaning loans and free agents only.

Don’t ask me how during takeover talks players can be sold but not bought. Best to ask Roland how that works. This could get nastier as Duchatelet flogs the family silver one by one.

Welling already?

A whole week in Blighty and not even a sniff of a new Addicks signing to shout from the roof tops.

From behind the curtain it looks as if Guy Luzon is attempting to manage his budget and his transfer targets within the restrictions imposed on him, and the sale of Standard Liege has not only corked the flow of Belgium imports but actually obstructed them.

Frederic Bulot has been allowed to train and actually play in pre-season friendlies for Charlton but it is thought that Standard are playing hardball in the transfer negotiations, and to add to the obstacles, French club Reims have now joined the fray for the French speaking midfielder.

15 players released

Part one of Luzon/Duchatelet/Meire’s summer transfer strategy was executed today with the announcement of 15 players released.

They are: Tal Ben Haim; Simon Church; Chris Eagles; Roger Johnson; Lawrie Wilson; Oguchi Onyewu; Neil Etheridge; Jack Munns; Harry Osborne; Harry Gerard; Kadell Daniel; Kurtis Cumberbatch; Kieran Monlouis; Rhys Browne; Levander Pyke.

A mixture of the unfortunate attrition of young pros who were unable to step up plus 7 first teamers. My only disappointment is seeing Ben Haim go, although it was apparently his own decision. Not so much disappointed but sad to see Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church move on.

The Welshman scored just 10 goals in Charlton colours, but his work rate could never be questioned, but I expect his career will have to continue down a division.

Lawrie Wilson’s form dipped this season after an excellent 2014/15 season, when I personally thought he was player of the year. He was very friendly with Hamer, Morrison, Hughes and Jackson and an integral part of Chris Powell’s squad but he was sidelined under both Peeters and Luzon and the writing was on the wall. However I am pleased that he was able to come back to the club where he began his career to show us what a great pro he is. Best of luck Lawrie.

Joe Pigott has had his loan extended with Southend United until the end of the season.

The Shrimpers manager Phil Brown said: “It takes that element of doubt away. When you see the quality he has in training, it takes that risk away.”

Break time over

I have arrived in Miami from Kansas City this afternoon and joined by a mate we will have a night on the tiles before flying back to Bermuda Saturday evening.

That means tomorrow I will again be away from home whilst the Addicks play signifying more desperate tapping at the phone for two hours.

The International break was a bit of a nuisance and I hope it hasn’t interrupted our good start out of the blocks. Watford took the opportunity to replace their manager despite a terrific start and the Hornets will be playing under former Brighton boss Oscar Garcia for the first time.

Have we got goals in Peeters new look team?

I wonder if the Addicks have finished their summer shopping, I hope not as I still think we look short on options and most importantly firepower.

Scoring goals last season was our biggest handicap and I still don’t think Peeters and Duchâtelet have done enough to address that. I have my reservations on Pigott, but Peeters has started the youngster in every friendly so far. Still only 20, and with time to bloom, he began last season in the 1st team picture but was eventually unable to unseat more experienced players. Even though those players weren’t doing it.

Other than Yann, those picked in front of Joe – Church, Obika, Tudgay, Reza and Sordell, except in the final fixtures – didn’t deliver goals either. Piotr Parzyszek wasn’t considered good enough by three managers and has now moved elsewhere in the network on loan.

New manager bounce

No, not us. Nottingham Forest have this morning sacked Billy Davies after 8 games without a win and with Forest now out of the Play-Off positions.

Old Addicks foe Neil Warnock is set to take charge until the end of the season. Warnock, who has a powerpoint presentation to rival Ian Dowie will be in his 10th management job and his first game is tomorrow against José Riga’s Addicks. Former Notts County boss Keith Curle is expected to be Warnock’s number two.

Billy Davies, who had just been given a touchline ban only signed a 4-year contract extension at the City Ground last October.

Crazy day down in SE7

Ok, so where do we begin?

Let’s look at those going out. Dale Stephens to Brighton is done, undisclosed of course. Good luck to him, my last personal memory of Dale was his winner at St Andrews.

Yann Kermorgant was back at Sparrows Lane today and I am trying to understand what has gone on before and what can still happen in the next 36 hours. It appears Duchâtelet has offered him a contract extension, but one that Yann wasn’t particularly happy with. He has also insisted that Powell be guaranteed his future too. I wouldn’t think for a minute that the Belgium was very happy with this and with that accepted the £500,000 on offer from Bournemouth.

This has almost certainly been Powell and Duchâtelet’s first clash. The Daily Mail reported earlier that Powell’s future was now uncertain. That is hardly news, and I really don’t think Powell is a quitter.

Feed the Pig

I mentioned Joe Pigott yesterday and right on cue the young striker hit a 1st half hat-trick in the pre-season opener at Welling this afternoon.

Pigott, 19, is a big lad and according to a text I got from a mate was very composed in front of goal. Hopefully we will see some more of what he can do pre-season. Powell played two different sides for each 45 minutes with Kermorgant scoring one and laying two on for Pigott. Green scored the 5th for the 2nd half team. Powelly and the many Addicks present would’ve been pleased with the first run out of the summer played in bright sunshine.
