Gavin Carter statement
Late today Gavin Carter put out a statement following yesterday’s Guardian article. Plus, he has also spoke to Rich Cawley. Well worth the subscription if you have yet to do so, by the way!
If I jumped to conclusions, then that is what they also call 15 years of hurt. Suspicious minds to quote Elvis.
No apology from me, and perhaps I’ll re-assess at the end of the month, but I am more than happy that Carter eventually took to the airwaves this afternoon. In full:
“I understand press speculation can concern fans, so let me address the Guardian story directly. What I’ve said publicly several times before, is that this ownership group is seeking new investment to help us progress.
“This is similar to the route taken by clubs like Ipswich, Wrexham and Bolton, and is not new news for Charlton. I’ve been inundated with messages since the story broke. Please, don’t be concerned. We’re a Championship and WSL club, in a better position than we’ve been for 20 years. The five-year plan requires we reach Championship average revenues by 2027/28, and we’re increasing spend on players to back that.
“This ownership group has been nothing but good for this club. We’re focused on channelling all our energy into driving the club forward with our supporters and with that togetherness I’m confident we’ll continue to achieve our ambitions for Charlton.”
I will say I trust Gavin Carter more than any owner/ investor/ senior official since Peter Varney. He is here for the club, not for himself.
It has been obvious for a while that the club are seeking additional investment. Sadly the current group cannot see the upside of adding more capital themselves but I get football ownership is a cash cow, and your regular kind of billionaire is always trying to establish a way to make a turn.
I still fell there is an element of gloom about the place. Nothing a new signing or three and a much more upbeat Nathan Jones later this week couldn’t improve.
If only I could believe the statements that are made by our hierarchy. The transfer window does not suggest a strong end and therefore, a fight against relegation once again. We desperately need a top goalscorer and a classy goal scoring midfield player like Kieler-Dunn. How far away from match fitness is Josh Edwards and Matty Godden? Every club appears to be strengthening quality wise but we are floundering.
The gloom can be lifted if we can get wins in the coming weeks and firmly establish ourselves in the league. Give the new signings time to bed in and I’m.optimistic…keep the faith all you doubters, and I can’t wait to see Nathan at least smile in the new style dug out….with heated seats !!!!

I Agree CA after all we’ve been through the last 15 years and a news paper report like that yesterday we start thinking here we go again. Lets turn up against derby and get behind the team and hopefully we’ll have a decent season with the help of a couple of more signings
If the ownership has been nothing but good for this club why have we not signed players us fans can see that are needed in certain areas mainly midfield to me the statement was why don’t you as fans shut up and let us get on with things as we know what we are doing
Who is going to pump money into a big hole we really do need someone who will buy Roland out then we don’t have to deal with another ron noads type scumbag who will keep putting the rent up

I don’t think anyone will invest in this club while we don’t own the ground. That’s the first thing the owners should be looking at. Then we will all know that they mean business.

On a lighter note my son and I were discussing the worse player or players to put on a Charlton shirt, I said mike small on loan from west ham, my son name 2 while he’s been supporting, roger Johnson and 2 Simon makienok
Mike Small is a definitely up there. Roger Johnson from the modern era as well. Sadly many more from the Duchatelet reign than Murray/Slater times.
Worsley do you remember the keeper we had from one of Roland’s other teams I’m pretty sure he was during Chris Powells team when players were forced for him to play he was so good I can’t remember his name 😀
It is not positive, just less negative. Gavin is between a rock and a hard place, ultimately, he is employed by the club and needs to paint the best picture. I think the fans need to think similarly until we know different.
There is no advantage in seeking the negatives . When fans turn, it rarely ends well. We would have given good money to be in this position a couple of years back, so let’s enjoy it and get behind Jones and the team.
I can’t really see any good reason to be an owner beyond vainness. The championship is full of clubs risking too much for the promised land. We need to be realistic, we don’t generate enough money to be genuinely competitive, and even if they want to, the owners are constrained from bridging the gap beyond £30m in a three year period. The difference is far greater than that.
We need to be smart with our money , ask for loan favours, hope another youth team player emerges (always my favourite), and get some luck in running.
The clue is in the name, but I have my cup final in game week 2!!!😂

Whatever people say about this ownership, they should never forget that they stepped-up and purchased the club from the Danish/American shyster, Sandgaard. That alone enabled the club to live and fight another day. They have provided stability and progression. The club was rewarded with a premature promotion to the Championship and is now a more attractive investment opportunity as a consequence. Yes, things could be better but we still have a club. The owner’s have invested so far in this transfer window – not as much as we would all like – and this imo demonstrates their commitment. We just need a few more investors to help take us to the next level (top 10 Championship).

I had quite a lot of shares once. They turned out to be worth zilch.
Thought the Cawley interview with Carter was solid & he asked about many of the issues discussed here and elsewhere. Mostly fluff answers, but did mention that the owners are looking for additional investment but are also opening to sell for the right price. No real revelations, but an interesting read. Carter talking outta both sides of his arse though re: the budget & how much they’ll be spending this year vs last. One minute he says the budget will be about the same as last year, then the next he says we should finish higher in the table because we’ll be spending more this season. It can’t be both lol. Just hoping for a couple more quality signings before the window closes, but obviously we need to clear the decks a little to make room. Carter did say that the offers for anyone to be moved would have to meet the clubs valuation, just hoping they’re not unrealistic of the price the many L1 players taking space that we need to cull are worth. Asisine to keep lesser talent and lose out on oppt to improve the squad just because the offer was less than you wanted. Hoping that doesn’t happen.
With the current limit on player wages being based on turnover then all talk of buying players is witless guff. Until such time as Charlton has transformed its income stream then the wage bill and transfer losses are effectively capped. To ignore that brings points deductions and inevitable relegation. Surely everybody understands that, don’t they? Things are moving in the right direction income wise and players of a certain price tag never come with guaranteed results.
How many of the hectors will cheerfully accept a doubling of season ticket prices?
