Silly season

The silly season is back.

Bristol City today sacked Gerhard Struber and replaced him with 78-year old Roy Hodgson. The ex-England manager has been retired since leaving Crystal Palace over two years ago, and will take charge of City for the remaining seven games of the season starting with us on Good Friday.

I have to say, we face an inordinate amount of teams who have just sacked their manager or about to sack their manager.

Our game at Bristol City was only Struber’s second game and he couldn’t quite make it to the return. It sounds as if City are planning for a whole sea change with Hodgson helping them “set the standards and values at the club that we will need to be successful going forwards,” which will include a new Director of Football.

Struber, and City’s fanbase had grown frustrated at the club and Struber was not happy that the owners sold key players Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner to division rivals Ipswich and Wrexham in January effectively derailing their play-off bid.

Hodgson’s first job was in 1976 with Halmstad in Sweden, and with Struber’s back room team haviing been cleared out too, we’ll have to see who joins him.

Ray Lewington, a youngster at 69, was Hodgson’s assistant at Palace.

Wasn’t he (Hodgson) in the same youth team as our very own, Lenny Lawrence?

Blimey. Good get, Christopher. They both played in the same school team, John Ruskin Grammar in Croydon.

That’s made me think! I recall making my debut for my South London school football team in about 1964 and it was against John Ruskin. I wonder if…..

Very possible. It would’ve been around that time. Maybe a bit before.

I queued up behind Roy Hodgson in the days when there was a temporary ticket office in the Covered End car park. No expectation of special treatment, just waited like everyone else and just announced himself as Roy Hodgson of Blackburn Rovers then walked away like an ordinary fan. Nice to see.

Yes yet another so-called New Managers bounce and yes a reminder CAFC are far from safe and 54 or 55 points are still needed and yes other teams playing each other, but be nice just for once to get out of this scrap ourselves.

We seem to have a curse as we seem to play important home games every season with clubs who appoint a new manager.
I hope we don’t seen the predicted ‘bounce’ from Bristol and Hodgson can leave us with no.points…..its going to be a very very important game for us..
