Charlton Athletic 1 Birmingham City 0

1-0 to the Charlton boys.

Huge win at home today that was peppered with some really strong individual performances and a real desire from the team to get the win.

Chambers came back in at left wing back, Docherty started alongside Coventry who kept his place. Kaminski, Burke, Sichenje and Berry all injured.

The Addicks were kicking towards the Covered End in the first half and the game started slow and steady with the first real chance not coming until the 21st minute, when the sprightly looking TC crossed to the far post but Clarke’s first touch was a little heavy, and his shot was blocked out for a corner.

Docherty had a header but the half came to a close with not much between the sides, but us just edging it.

The second half started similarly cagey, but Birmingham’s possession game began to get more advanced pushing us back and they were in control of the game.

Our midfield was getting deeper and there were tired legs. Jones changed it at the right time and brought on Kelman and Rankin-Costello for Docherty, who had a very good game, and Chambers. TC went to left wing back.

4 minutes later we were ahead. Long throw from Carey, Dykes flicked on and Kelman steadied himself and hit an instinctive shot high into the corner.

After that it was about managing the game and working very, very hard in shape and resolve.

And we did, the red shirts battled for everything kept the Blues’ excursions into the box at a minumum and pushed them out to shooting range only.

In fact in injury time Leaburn burst through and from a tight angle shot wide and then did the same with seconds left and forced a corner.

A valuable 3 points, and another very good performance on the back of last week.

There were some terrific individual displays. The back three were superb. Jones peerless against two very different opponents, Bell impenetrable and Ramsey excellent showing a mix of aggression and intelligence.

Enjoy your evening’s, Addicks.

🎙️”We are building, Charlie [Kelman] is one person that we really believe in and we see him every day. I spoke to him for a long time after the game. He has been really sharp, really good this week and today’s performance was excellent.”

It’s the first game in a long while that I sat in my seat and just knew we were going to win ! I do think that a natural striker like Kelman gives us the missing piece we often lack. Dykes is a delight to watch, a wiley campaigner, good at the dark arts and a tireless professional. Really enjoyed today and I was there with my grandson on his 8th birthday. Keenan Gough kindly gave him his warm up tee shirt! 😀

An excellent result from a tough game, and another 3 points toward staying in this division. Since the first day we signed Dykes, Kelman should have partnered him up front. With a bit of luck, NJ will keep that partnership going.

That was a massive result, especially as the teams below us are all picking up points.

I thought that Charlie Kelman’s post-match comments were quite insightful, even if there was some reading between the lines on my part. NJ is clearly pushing hard to get more from this group and some individuals in-particular, and at times these players are not going to be happy. But if they are reacting in a positive manner, such as CK did, by getting on the pitch and scoring a winner, then I believe that it is working, and it also puts to bed any doubts of NJ ‘losing the dressing room’ that was thrown about during the rough spell we had recently.

Middlesbrough feels like a free hit now!

Another vital three points, phew! Another improved performance.
Obviously I can’t comment without a moan though, got to keep up my image 🙂
Why NJ starts with TC on the pitch, let alone as a striker remains a mystery. He is best used as a sub IMO.
Hopefully Kelman will get more time alongside Dykes or Leaburn as we enter the last ten games.
Six to Nine points could see us safe.

What a great performance for the 2nd week running and in this case a massive 3 points. Curiuos about the lack of a red card for Birmingham striker August Prsikie for his constant physical attacks on Lloyd Jones. NJ mentioned it in another article and the fact that the 4th official ‘didnt see anything’ which seems very strange given that the 4th offical was the infamous ‘ars**le’ Leigh Doughty from Lancashire who dished out 9 yellow cards in our game against Portsmouth last month. 😡

Priske was a nightmare wasn’t he. VAR would have sent him off for that first challenge and then all he wanted to do after that was jump into Jones or foul him without any intention to win the ball.

I can’t comment on the match. Just wanted to say I enjoy your blogs/ reports. You refrain from moaning and if there is something negative that needs to be said you do so in as factual and balanced a way as possible. Cheers dude. COYR

A deserved win against a team that we kept quiet for most of the match, although Birmingham did have a few moments here and there.

Lyndon Dykes might not score very many goals but he’s contributed a few assists by winning exactly those sort of headers where he gets there first and flicks the ball on, it still took a good finish though from Charlie Kelman, but that’s what he was signed to do.

I’d like to see him start a few games alongside Dykes although I’ve heard a rumour that he’s not 100% fit and in his post-match interview with Charlotte Richardson he hinted at something going on behind the scenes.

CA What a difference in the last two games when we were actually on the front foot trying to play in the opposing half rather than in our own half for most of the game! Some attractive football at last, finally it must have clicked with NJ &/or others have persuaded him, that trying to play mostly defensively and hoping that we can keep a clean sheet and can snatch a goal to win, will not be enough!
Unfortunately I couldn’t go to the game as had put my back out on Monday and it still wasn’t right so didn’t want to chance it, so watched it at home instead.
I know we lost against Wrexham and certain people on here, who are always sarcastic to the likes of myself, Daggs, John West and others etc who want more attacking football, were saying you got what you wished for trying to play that way, but hey when we came out from the Wrexham game, though we lost there was an upbeat, as the football was miles better and we weren’t as normal, camped in our own half with side ways and backwards passing, with only poor finishing letting us down. We all thought that it would be back to the same old way against Birmingham, but no it was on the front foot from the off and like against Wrexham, we played with more fluenecy and moved forward together as a team, with the midfield being much more positive with passes going forwards rather than trying to play in our own half. After we scored, I sat back in my chair and thought here we go, everyone back again and bringing on some more defenders to keep hold of the one nil lead, but no we continued to go at them and NJ wasn’t calling his players back which was a first this season, plus we still looked positive and could have scored a couple more, as with only with a short time left did NJ bring on two centre backs, which at that point made complete sense. Watching on TV, after the game, the players themselves even looked far more happy with playing this way, rather than everyone packed in their own half and just lumping the ball up to a solitary forward, and were even jumping around at the end with fist pumps to the crowd.
So it just shows we don’t have to be so negative & defensive to get a good result and we can play some entertaining football if allowed to! Obviously there will be some games we have to really grind out to get a result, which can be boring and defensive, but you expect that with any team.
I think those who believe it doesn’t matter if we just continue with negative football as long as we stay up are not thinking of the issue this will also cause! A lot of new supporters who have bought season tickets this season won’t probably renew, as they can watch those boring performances at lower league clubs costing a lot less, but they want to be entertained, so will go elsewhere. To give a prime example, the young lad in his 20’s, who now lives here but comes from Hong Kong, bought the seat at the end next to me, has recently commented how poor and negative Charlton have been and wasn’t quite expecting that, plus his father who came over to visit came to one of the games in his place, as his son was ill, didn’t think much of the way they played. You have to also wonder how many other new potential season ticket buyers would also be put off, as many will want to see a team worth watching and at least trying to play attractive & entertaining football! Plus, unless a player is just in it to line their own pockets, we have a few of those already, what really good player would want to join Charlton to just to play in a negative boring way, as like any pro sportsman, they want to show what they can do, when given a chance.
Anyway lets just hope, NJ has at last listened to reason and will continue with more of the same when they can, which will benefit all concerned. 🙂
Also NJ please retain Mannion in goal, even when Kaminski is fit again, as you can see he has already instilled more confidence in the backline, with his catching and commanding the area.

Quite simply another 3 points towards our target. Yeap we played better football and created a few chances.
Very pleased that Kellman scored and thought Ramsey had one of his best games this season. How Priskte remained on the pitch I don’t know, and he cost £6 million.. I thought Birmingham were poor and they have spent big over the last 2 seasons.
There were many debates about the quality of football at the moment, and ex-players are saying the beautiful game has gone. As l said before I don’t care how the points come this season, as staying up is the focus. Interesting speaking to other championship fans, they feel we are defensively strong and look enviously at our clean sheet record.
So it’s something to build on, clearly we have to improve our expansive performances next season.
But 1-0’s, are ok and you can’t entertain everyone. Arsenal fans are not caring how they win, only securing the PL. A Spurs fan I know is bemoaning that they can’t keep a clean sheet and wants a more defensive approach to ‘ stop the rot’.
I guess as fans we all want different things at different stages.
6 points will do from 10 games.. and then as we were saying on Saturday, maybe an away league game trip to Spurs next season.. 😉😀
I am going to Boro on Wednesday, staying with some friends nearby by. Then it’s back down taking in the Oxford game on the Saturday.
