Millwall 4 Charlton Athletic 0

Humiliated. Again.

It doesn’t really matter who manages, who plays, the result is the same. There has been some tough watches against them in past years, but blimey that was an embarrassment.

That has to be a watershed moment.

A huge week ahead on the field and in the window. So many problems to address. No one is playing well, there is no leadership and confidence is zero.

Jones’ team is playing with no identity, everything good that we had has disappeared. Jones carries the can, but those players need to be embarrassed tonight to wear that red shirt.

We should have been 3-0 down at the break, but ironically we saw some of our better football in recent weeks, and had some decent possession.

Campbell was up for it and dangerous and I thought Chambers did okay, but once more we have signed a player that can’t play for 90 minutes.

That forced a change, and the 2nd half was shameful. We were all over the place, no drive, no heart, no balls. I also did not like the four at the back. So many shocking individual performances.

As per the script they capitulated at the end. The couple of hundred left in the away end made their feelings clear at the final whistle. Today adds to the book of disgraceful displays.

This feels a little different though because it is about more than one game. As I said this has to be the watershed moment, the players have to dig deep now to turn this around, and Jones has to prove that he has the ability to lead this team and find solutions that work at this level with players he has now almost soley brought in.

The Jones out crowd is the loudest it has been tonight, the nerves amongst the fan base are shot and we have another forgettable day at The Den. What a time to be an Addick.

🎙️ “I am embarassed. I feel for the fans. We have let the fans down and we let the club down today. I apologise to the fans, and today I have to because of the nature of defeat, today we were so far off.” – Nathan Jones

As an Addick for about 65 years this hurts. I do, however, enjoy reading your posts, win or lose. In fact your reports are the ones I force myself to read when we have lost, like today. Thanks for your reasoned and measured reporting and please keep going.

It is very hard to find anything positive about Charlton’s game today. That was a truly shocking, embarrassing performance. Where was the fight? Where was the passion? Where was the pride? They looked beaten before they kicked-off. It’s a derby ffs. We were second best all over the pitch. A couple of important decisions went against us but Charlton didn’t deserve anything from this game. Our tactics are embarrassing and belong in a different era. We hardly strung any passes together, we lacked urgency, and we were frightened to even try and get on the ball. This is one of the worst performances l have seen for a long long time, and to capitulate at 2-0 in the way they did in a ‘derby’ game is unforgivable. We need an immediate tactical rethink.

I’ve been saying for weeks Nathan Jones is a clueless, bigheaded, failure. If he isn’t sacked tomorrow, we’re down. If the board grow some bollocks and do sack him off. It will still be a struggle to survive. But it’s our only chance. Get a new man in charge Monday morning. Even if Curtis Fleming takes over. We need fresh eyes and brain. Is Rowett available? Could we tempt Luton’s assistant manager back (Chris Powell) someone has to come in.

Well said Daggs! He’s not so much the Messiah now. He has to go. Here’s hoping Neil Warnock can offer us a lifeline to survive in the Championship rather than that League One rubbish.. Gives the owners a chance to find the right person. Shame we never got Alex Neil

I am in Uganda and went to great lengths to try and watch today’s game though a defeat was my full expectation.
I manage a team of far lower standard but I need to say what I find glaringly obvious in my humble opinion.
Early in the match Steve Brown said our defence is just not what it was at the start of the season and we are all over the place.
The glaringly obvious is Amari Bell. We have lost 11 fixtures this season plus Coventry away. In 9 of those games Bell was not starting and against Coventry we were winning when he went off injured.
We only have half a defence without him.
We have also only won three games without him
    – against 9 man Sheff Utd, 1-0 against a poor Oxford team and 1-0 v WBA.
We need a quality left sided central defender or we are doomed.
I also am less convinced about Chambers at LWB than you CA. I hope I am wrong but he seems too lightweight for the physicality of the Championship.

You must be the most pissed off Addick in Uganda 🤣.

You are absolutely spot on. We have missed various players at various times, but none more so than Bell. He is calm, experienced and able to recover from a mistake.

I’m sorry but there are no excuses for a display like that. Up until the goal, I thought we looked ok, so that was only for a meagre seven minutes. After that we were a shambles in all departments, but survived up to half time. Second half I thought we would come out fighting and up our game. How wrong was I. NJ decided to substitute Carey ten minutes into the half. Why?….only NJ knows that, as I thought he looked the only player that was getting forward with any conviction. TC had one of his better games, but Anderson and Gillesphey are not Championship players. The young lad Chambers is another ‘Chucks’ apparently, who can only manage limited game time…..the question has to be asked ‘Why bring him in if he is not fully fit’…… NJ’s after match interview was full of apologies (again) with the same old retoric. The buck stops with him. I’m begining to question his ability along with his pigheadedness. Maybe the Championship is a step too far for him as well as some of the players. One shot on target in ninety minutes is not going to save us from relegation.

Surprised that there can possibly be any ‘pro-Jones’ supporters this morning after the latest shambolic performance. However, the owners cannot afford to sack Jones due to having extended his contract after we were promoted; too costly, and they will not wish to lose the little credibility they have at the moment

Why not give Curbishley and Brown a go until the end of the season; what have they got to lose? we are all but relegated at the present time. Jones has lost the dressing room. Unless the owners are suddenly prepared to spend real championship money this week, we are going down to L1 again.

The problem there Graham, is that there are a limited amount of players available at the moment, contract wise, who would fit the bill, let alone ones who would relish a relegation fight. The January window is notoriously tight for movement as most players are contracted to June or July. Short term loans of fringe players is usually the most popular.

We have a relegation fight now and I’m trying to be positive but it’s being eaten away.

We have a problem. It seems that Jones has lost all control of what happens on the pitch and it looks as though we have no plans about how to turn our season around other than to continue to recruit players who aren’t crucial to their present teams.
I have only once in over 65 years joined the crowd chanting for a manager to be sacked and that was at an away game at Burton
when Appleton was in charge and clearly not enjoying his day. It seemed the kindest thing to suggest that we sacked him and paid him off. I am not saying that Jones should go yet but he has to turn our season around very quickly or we shall be going straight back to the hell that is League Division One.
If that happens, I will be sad but I will get over it, as I have many times before. I will continue to support and follow Charlton but I certainly will not be sending a Christmas card to a certain Mr Jones.

I believe you are correct Greg, he won’t play Apter, nor Olafe, who he now wants to move on in this transfer window, even though he’s hardly given him a chance, compared to most of his not good enough favourites, plus probably even looking to get rid of Apter. Also at halftime I overheard someone talking about Docherty and that he had been dropped because he had, had words with Jone’s, which does seem correct, as he wasn’t even on the subs bench for the last two games!
As per my previous posts, whilst I have not intimated NJ should be sacked, I have said many times especially lately, that unless he ceases with his pig headedness of playing the same formation of wing backs every game, stops playing his favourite players no matter how bad they play, changes his tactics and play players in their best positions, we will be in real relegation trouble and after that absolutely one of the worst displays I have witnessed from a Charlton team, we now are!
I agree with nearly all of the current posts on here, Daggs, JW, Gregg, Norfolk Red etc, so no need to say anymore on them. The only one positive out of the game was TC, for as much as some slate him, he gave his all and he was like the lone ranger up front fighting for everything, and though he was played as a striker by NJ this time, which apart fom NJ, we all know he isn’t, he was always busting a gut to get back to try and assist the backline, so have to give credit where it’s due.
The two issues that now concerns me, is first what are the Board going to do about it before its too late? As after such a long run of only two wins and spiralling downwards at an alarming speed, which at present, with such continuing poor displays that are getting worse and no likely hood of stopping at most other Club’s the Manager would be gone by now!
The second issue is, why has NJ allowed carte blanche to bring in many of these players, who were injury prone &/or had a current injury, his old cronies who had served him in the past but past their best and players who were no better than what we already had? I would love to know who the hell, if anyone, has been doing due diligence on checking on some of these players NJ wanted, before signing them!
Now before the Rose Tinted Glass brigade come back with their comments and also advise that NJ has been the best manager since the Curbs days etc, they are entirely wrong.
There are three managers, off the top of my head who I can think of, who stand out head and shoulders above NJ’s boring and tedious way of playing and also had nothing like the funds NJ has been given by the owners to bring in players, Chris Powell &, Lee Bowyer both who got us promoted with a far better team and the third who probably had the hardest job of all Riga, can’t remember his first name. Ducholette brought him when we were in the bottom three with relegation staring in the face with a complete rabble of a team and I don’t think anyone at that time believed we would stay up. Somehow, with that same squad, he gained the total respect of the players and completely turned that misfit of a team, with only a few really good players, to play with desire and passion that we hadn’t seen for quite a while and the whole of Charlton supporters really got behind them and with Riga at the helm we survived. Unfortunately, whilst Riga wanted to stay for the next season as per the fans also did, Duch had other ideas and brought in another useless manger, who got us relegated, with Duch again bringing in Riga to try and save the day, but it was much to late for him to save us this time.
If only we could find another manager who could do the same now!

Carey is the worst type to have in a struggling squad – no effort no heart – plenty on show when things are going well – AWOL as soon as things get gritty. For all their inadequacies Andersons and Dochertys are what’s required because they don’t hide, they don’t give up. Keeping on Ramsay when he was stinking up the place (again) was baffling.
2 shameful decisions from the referee at critical moments played their part – the Dykes ‘handball’ nonsense and obvious foul in the build up to ‘wall’s 2nd goal.
The better side rightly won the match but Gavin Ward’s performance was as pitiful as Ramsay and Carey combined

There’s a lot of understandable anger 😡 from our fans in this dispiriting and despicable display from our team yesterday. I left the Den (yes I was there..and many fans were angry during the game as we lacked any cohesive and were getting bullied by a very strong and taller players. How their no5 literally grabs hold two of our players for their second , made him look like Hercules. That simply can’t happen at this level. I have been saying for weeks left side is our Achilles heel as is the central midfield areas. I went to the game more in hope than real belief.. many fans before the game were nervous as some could see this happening.
It was hard day and has to endure an evening of messages from friends who were in the opposite end. We were poor when the starting XI was announced I 😬 cringed. I don’t think NJ has got some starting XI right and on I can’t see how Anderson has been selected in the last 3..sorry but he is not at this level and hasn’t been for awhile.. gillisphey is not at this level but is the only left footed defender we have fit so he has to play for balance. Ramsey and Chambers were run rugged, a tough debut for chambers but looked very rusty. TC was our main threat.. but is not strong enough, falls over a lot without any conviction and looks pleading at the ref. Carey has dropped in form, got outmuscled several times and I and many others could see why he was replaced. He offered nothing and lost possession too easily in midfield. Unfortunately the replacements were not much better. Fullah is lightweight for these matches.. Coventry has lost form too , now looking for the extra time for passing . Anderson offered nothing and was no surprise he was replaced. A loan to league 1 surely must happen this week. I see some saying about Doherty, if was only a few months ago the same fans were criticising him for being too negative. I think his movement is too slow for this league. You to be athletic to cover ground and get up and down. We need a tackler in midfield , an enforcing influence – we are simply too weak and can’t pass the ball in midfield. With chambers going off at half time, I said to my friends this will be 5-0, as TC is not a wingback and we couldn’t contain their attacks down that side in the first half. Ramsey was getting run rugged and mistakes were being made as we tired. With Bree gone we had nothing on the bench to replace him.

So what now… personally I don’t think NJ should be sacked.. but and it is a big but.. we need to turn these performances around. Players fall outs are common in all teams.. and we are in the results business so NJ will be under pressure to get results soon.
We have one of the lowest budgets so fans need to get in their minds when commenting on transfers.
We need central midfielders and left side players even more.
Right side needs cover too .
I woke this morning, and saw and read many comments about the club, players and managers.
We all knew this was going to be a tough season..we were favourites to go down. Some got carried away by our start, others were pleased with points in the bag.
We are in relegation fight.. things need to be turned around.. currently i think NJ should be given that chance. The manager suggestions by others don’t give me any hope of improvement with this current squad.

I am at the Leicester game.. staying with friends who are Leicester fans. They consider themselves in the relegation fight with their expected points deduction; be it 6,9,12 you can see that being a drawn out process with appeals.

Yes there is still faith.. we have suffered too much in the last few years not to have any hope we might survive.

People will have their opinions on managers from our past. We have had a series of bad managers and club owners. I see our last one is now being filed for fraud in the US.
We are in this together, I appreciate the diversity of discussions, I may agree with some, some are plainly baffling, but there’s a guy across the pond who is baffling in their opinions so I guess it’s the sign of the times. I disagree with the name calling and derogatory language used.

Please keep the faith, believed in your team.. cos they need us now more than ever. I will be shouting for them on Saturday.. go with hope.. and that’s why we are fans.

Thanks CA.. nope i was one of the few at the end.., held back before allowed to leave. I understand why people left and their anger. Those remaining expressed their frustration and feelings directly at the players and manager who at least had the courtesy to come over, many other managers and players have scuttled off the pitch very quickly on many occasions in past matches. There some direct comments made at the time. You know afterwards, there were some more reflective remarks.. but still anger about an inept display.
