Left wing back signed

The Addicks have signed 21-year old Luke Chambers from Liverpool on loan until the end of the season.

This is Chambers fourth loan move from Liverpool, where he’s been since the age of 6.

That’s the good news, and we desperately need bodies there, but Chambers has not played a lot of football in recent times.

Chambers has had a long-term back injury and only returned to Liverpool’s U21’s in December after 9 months out.

Prior to that the Preston-born youngster had a successful half-season with Kilmarnock and then two loans with Wigan, the latter last season ended early after that back injury.

We really are shopping in the aisles of injury returnees, but in all honesty this is what January’s transfer window is. Nonetheless, Chambers has a very good pedigree, has come through the Liverpool system, played for England from U15’s and is a UEFA European U19 Championship winner with England.

He sounds versatile, left-footed and is actually a wing-back. Welcome to SE7 Luke, let’s see how good you really can be.

Yet another player who has had a bad back injury for 9 months and has only returned in December, so has hardly played, which would have been only in their under 21’s and probably also isn’t fully match fit, especially for the Championship, as his previous loan was with Wigan in league 1!
So what has happened to the suppose signing of Swiss Junior Ligue, who has made nine appearances in the Swiss Super League so far this season and appears a better bet?

Tired of hearing the constant excuses from NJ; we are going back to L1 with him at the helm, he has lost the dressing room. Needs to clear his desk asap!!

Its a tough league! Most clubs have vastly bigger budgets and therefore quality on the pitch. NJ is doing a good job with the playing staff be has. Replacing NJ would be utter madness.

If he can remain injury free he’s a good signing but his injury record is ot good….and another rumour is Edwards is out for the rest of the season….it never rains it pours

Welcome Luke. Hope you get to play some championship games, improve your fitness, and overcome any lingering doubts you might have about that back injury. Show us what you can do.

    Loving the positivity of replies!
CA as you know, NJ is an emotional guy, if he packs it in (which is not beyond him if he tires of a fan base that meltdowns every time an injury stricken side loses a few games in a league we haven’t been in for 5 years) we’re 100% going down. You I know will also know there is close to zero chance of him being relieved of his duties anytime soon.
So honestly it’s beyond me why we boo at half time and get carried away with all the criticism. We either fixate on recentism and forget where we were a few months ago when near full strength or get our heads stuck in the Curbishley past and forget where we’ve been the past 20 years.
I do agree the Karoy thing has to stop but after that, let’s not make a laughing stock of ourselves by drumming out the standout best manager we’ve had since the aforementioned.
Maybe we can be united on Saturday but somehow I doubt it.

I know, Steve. Laughable isn’t it. A bit like now saying Pep and Slot are rubbish, so much of a different analogy, but oh so the same.

I saw tonight someone say get rid of Jones and bring in Darren Moore. You cannot make this shit up.

Charlton fans are the best, but we love to be divisive. Drives me f’in mad.

CA, the truth hurts, and what angers us is that ALL supporters have acknowledged his achievements over the last 18 months, and that is not the issue.
It is as he harps on every week what he has done consistently, and there comes a time when it is just history and gone, and it is the here and now and the immediate future, which is at stake, and TBF every opportunity to have a sly dig at the supporters he does.
Also, the same old excuses every single week, and it is getting very tedious and very boring.
To quote him “We/I have signed some real quality and am very happy with my squad, but sadly, because of the obvious reason it has not been produced, and in fact, many players were injury-prone even before signing for us and/or simply not up to the Championship quality.
We have a chance but Jones must get rid of his huge ego and try something different, instead of hoof-ball, and play our attacking player in their proper positions, and man up and drop your falling out yet again with Apter, as was the case with May.
Yes, in the past he has a habit of walking away, but he needs that huge amount of money he gets and Jones, you are THE MANAGER, and you have to sort it out, but will he change??
        Never.
And that old stale sentence, and we can all work that one out, and repeated after Tuesday and ” We need to go back to basics and keep a clean sheet and hope we can score one goal on the break”
Then he says “It is not often that we do not score every game, and what is it about 3 times scoring 3 goals and never mind 2, and then we threw away 2 points at Blackburn/
COYR wake up and very fast and at least go for it ffs/

I kinda see what you are saying but to play our attacking players in positions as you say , we need our defensive line in place. Apter is a winger as is TC, so play them in their natural position you probably need play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. To play those we need a left back… and quite simply we have not had one for months. So we play 3-5-2. Then you need wingbacks. Apter and TC are not those. So it is understandable that NJ has played this way. The simple fact is some of the players are not upto the standard of the championship. We have to play long as the midfielders struggle to keep the ball and make incisive passes and runs.
Managers say a lot about players in the media. Harking back to May is pointless, he wanted to go and he struggled at Birmingham and now similar at Huddersfield all in league 1. So other managers have seen him as league 1 only. Anyway we got Godden so can’t see the problem.
My concerns are the standard of midfielders are up to it.. and previous comments on here have said similar things. I welcome Luke , and hope he can play the full 90. We need other midfielders x 2 and let the likes of Doherty, Anderson and Berry go , either loans or sold. Probably need another left-side player as well. Is that likely on this window, very doubtful. So we have to work with what we have, give them our support and hope we have enough to get over the line.

The support as usual, was definitely there again on Tuesday, and CAFC gave the gate at 19K plus and nowhere near that amount, but are season ticket holders just not showing up and the gates will continue to go down, unless by some miracle we start getting points and performances to match, that will continue.

And you turn up to support at the valley?? Or just sit in your armchair from afar.. we don’t need your support or opinions that you put on all the fan social media platforms. Happy you had various decades of support ..well done old man. There a new generation and listening to old men grumbles about the good old days.. are boring now. Have a little rest and we will wake you up for your dinner and changes of pants.

Since AC left 20 years ago we have had a whole host of managers who apart from 2 (not including NJ) have, putting it mildly been absolute rubbish. NJ is obviously a “Marmite” person but without him where would we be, probably languishing near the bottom of Div 1. He hasn’t always got it right, this is a difficult division as others have also said and we don’t have the budget of most teams. It is obvious he is passionate about the club. We need to keep the faith and get behind NJ and the team.
Oh and welcome to Luke hope he makes a difference.

Blimey, we sign a left back and open a can of negativity.

All we need to do this season is survive. We started well and then injuries and a few tough results knocked us back. But things even out over a season, for every Leicester wonder goal at home we get a sheff Utd away (or home) or a West Brom at home. If we can get the right players in the pitch we will stay up and it is so much better worrying about that than being ‘season over in January’ in League one with Appleton.
Yes NJ is divisive, yes he doesn’t always get the selections right to our eyes but he has to manage the players and go with what he sees.
Just imagine if we burgal a win on Saturday…..

If we had a squad where everyone was fit, I believe we would have enough quality to stave off relegation, and NJ’s wing back formation would be working. BUT, we have injuries to key players, so tactics have to be changed to utilise the rest of the squad. This unfortunately is what NJ is unable to do, so we have half a dozen players playing out of position. Sacking the manager at this time of the season would be madness, but he has to change formation, and utilise what we have in reserve. Playing your favourites who are not up to Championship standard and being pig headed will not keep us in this Division…….Ten days left in the window to sign some quality…… I wish Chambers well in his stay with us, but I don’t think he is the answer to our problems.

Spot on Greg and can only hope and pray that NJ will finally see the light that he has to change tactics and formations, to suit the players and not stick to his pig headedness of we are going to continue playing my way come what may! Otherwise we will soon be in the bottom three with relegation looming and home crowds diminishing.

CA – Thanks for the comment, will try to but unfortunately being well into my 70s and living in deepest darkest Dorset (beautiful County). Long gone are the days when living in Blackheath I walked or cycled to the Valley. Also have to care for my wife so rarely get to go to a live match. Have to put up with the odd live match and highlights and your great insight.
    Keep up the good work.

We needed a left-back, we’ve tried a number of options after Josh got injured, none have really looked a replacement so the club have got someone in.

I saw Jim Rodwell say he was our first choice…I’m sure our first choice would be someone with had some recent match experience and was cheap enough to fit into the wage structure plus they would be open to a move…the number of players fitting that criteria would realistically make for a very short list.

Luke Chambers now has a great opportunity to make a name for himself. I assume his game time will be managed perhaps with Amari’i Bell when he returns.
