Yesterday

A few comments on yesterday before we consign it to room 101.

That wasn’t us yesterday, it hasn’t been us, and now we have to make sure it doesn’t become us.

What was surprising to me however was why at 0-2 Kaminski didn’t feign injury allowing Jones to have a reset. Admittedly the goals came so quick but, he has been expert at changing things from the sidelines.

Yesterday he wasn’t but he must to have spotted how we were getting completely overrun even before they scored their first.

Southampton’s formation and the way their front three dropped into midfield completely overwhelmed us, and although we are a defence-first team, our midfield three have been crucial in protecting our box.

Yesterday the midfield were bystanders and got rolled around and provided no shield whatsoever.

A lesson to Jones and the team, but I would like to see the manager be a little more thoughtful to how the opposition play, even though I admire his aspiration to play our way and it has has yielded results.

Anyway, we have to bounce back, and Jones needs to find solutions whilst we have these players out injured. Lloyd Jones was also limping heavily towards the end.

Southampton were excellent though, but we knew we were going to see teams like this, but in other games like against Leicester, Ipswich and Bristol City our commitment, aggressiveness and organization has got us through.

As others have said one game does not define a season, but this does offer a reset and possibly might not long term be the worst thing to have happened. It was embarassing yesterday and Nathan Jones will be feeling that more than most this morning. Time to dig in as Curbs would say.

A somewhat ironic thought has crossed my mind. This time last year, we were struggling and looking like we could drop into relegation trouble.
Along came Christmas and an astonishing turnaround, eventually taking us to the play-offs.
This season we’ve done really well, until yesterday. With two very tough games up next, I hope we’re not heading for a reversal of last year.

We had a lot of injuries this time last year as well.

Let’s try to be a bit more positive.

You are welcome to be as positive as you like. Ive never been one for rose-tinted glasses.
Before the season began, I said I would be happy with survival. That still stands for me.

Totally agree with you on this Daggs, survival this season is the No 1 priority and those who have been thinking we can make the playoffs are living in cloud cuckoo land!
Southampton tore us apart time and time again and since supporting Charlton, similar time to you and Greg, I haven’t witnessed before a Charlton team in that first half collapse like a pack of cards, with a manager on the sidelines, who looked totally lost at what to do! Those who also think NJ turned it around in the second half are also delusioned, they took their foot of the gas and were just playing with us as they, like us, have another game on Tuesday, so threw on all the subs so players could get a rest. If they hadn’t, we could have easily lost in double figures.! Plus as Johnwest mentioned NJ complaining about loss of injured players, wouldn’t have made a difference to us losing just maybe a better scoreline, as Southampton were two levels above us. We have to be honest, under NJ &/or any previous manager since relegated from the Premiership, we have never produced such flair, slick passing going forward and entertainment.
          I only wish we could!
The hope now is that we can get at least one point in the next two games, to steady the ship.

Yes, agreed, but when Jones always spouted off about the injuries and sickness, and no other team would have coped with it.
All clubs get injuries but the problem is playing players in their proper positions would help.
Let’s just hope it is a one off and again CAFC love to sign omkiry-prone players and lack of quality too.
COYR 2 points this will will help lol

Apparently not. It seems only the top team go through. That is West Ham on goal difference.

Every game is a hard game in this division. Whether it be Sheffield Wednesday or Coventry we have to keep digging deep and keep the faith. Remember we are the newcomers here, and aren’t expected to overwhelm everyone we come up against. Our priority still, is to avoid relegation.

      Greg.
Yes, fair dues so far done really well up until yesterday and the real concern is the lack of goals and the lack of quality in the squad and the creativity.

I think most of us became aware of our lack of goals after the first four or five games John. I’m sure we expected Godden to be back sooner than this, given the retoric that was given out at the time of his surgery. Add that to negative performances from TC and Leaburn who are finding it hard to make the jump to the Championship ( one goal between them). Thank god for Sonny Carey !!!!!!

It’s going to be a likely bad week for us with level of opposition we play. Fingers crossed faith can be maintained with the team but lack of reaction from Jones was somewhat concerning. Has to be said what his backroom staff were seeing also and if this was relayed to Jones. Argue formation change tomorrow against Stoke as ultimately, what is there to lose. Project of playing wingers at wing backs has to end.

Our fans expect TC to track back, go past defenders, press with energy, put in the crosses AND score goals.

Two very tough away games this week. Maybe time to pack out the defence and midfield, play one up front and try to get a couple of nil-nils.
