Charlton Athletic 1 Millwall 1

History always repeats itself, something always happens and it is a given in this game that Millwall will score late, and late they did.

The hurt continues and it will take a couple of days for the fog to clear and when it does it will show that we played very well and were the better team.

Kayne Ramsey has been brilliant. Period. However, he did not need to make that challenge, but he backs himself on the timing of his tackles, but he missed badly there.

Millwall were getting back into the game just before the sending off, but I do think the sending off changed the result.

It was a typical frenzied derby, not many clear chances but I think we edged it overall and were the better in the majority of the individual battles.

Before we went down to ten, our press and desire was top notch, and there was a lot to like, especially bearing in mind the opposition.

Carey’s finish was excellent and we had our tails up at the break. Nonetheless as the 2nd half grew (kicking the wrong way) I suspect most Addicks started breaking out in sweats as we have been here so many times before.

TC showed why Jones plays him, I thought he was excellent, only bettered by the performance of Carey. Lloyd Jones was domineering and had Ivanovic in his pocket. Mentions also for Bell, Edwards, Coventry and Docherty.

Leaburn was a livewire when he came on, even when we were down on numbers and Kelman had his best game and looked a lot sharper.

We looked like we belonged again, and this level is so much more enjoyable, despite the disappointment of the result. We do have to show more quality in key situations, and find a way to get a second goal when ahead because we have to add real points and not just win points for style.

Tremendous noise from Addicks’ fans today in the largest derby crowd since I think 1968.

🎙️“My opinion won’t change on Kayne. I’m not suddenly going to hang him out to dry and say this, this and this. Kayne is a wonderful player. He has a certain level of ability. What he has to do is bring all those things together.” – Nathan Jones

It was a foolish tackle by Ramsey and so out of character for such a thoughtful player. However, like Jones, I will move on and forgive him. Millwall had just started to show us that they could play and one goal probably wouldn’t have been enough to secure all the points anyway.
You are right, CA: we just have to work out how to score more than once if we are going to win games and survive in this division. Having the opportunity to experience this higher level of football again is wonderful. We must ensure that we stay at this level, whatever it takes. Also, it is much easier to get to the Premiership from here!
Other than our inability to put our chances away, I am worried for Lloyd Jones. He is a dominating centre back and a real strike force when we win a corner. However, he was close to getting a red card yesterday., I thought. His style of constant phyical contact with his opponents at both ends of the pitch will eventually tire him out or lead to a lengthy suspension. What would we do without him?

Lloyd has been outstanding hasn’t he. He just needs to be managed properly. He has comeback really fit this summer bearing in mind he was taking injections to get him over the line last season.

What a game, atmosphere and a Charlton team who were aggressive to the end.Now we are facing more technical teams its given our players the opportunity to show what they are capable of in a very fast pace game.
Kate made an error but hey its not like him and up-to-the-minute sending-off he was brilliant.I really feel that he can’t be blamed for the leveller as Millwall stepped up their game and it was on the cards.
Sheffield are up next ….what can happen there??????

    A two points dropped result…

It was a rash challenge by Kayne Ramsay, but out of character, think of the well timed tackles he’s put in since he joined . I suppose he’s owed a mistake. Until then Millwall didn’t look like scoring and they were always going to throw the kitchen sink at us so we needed 11 players on the pitch, but we also had the players on the pitch to see the game out – we subbed on James Bree and then Reece Burke who are experienced at this level.

Other than that we were sharper in the final third and seemed to be looking to take one less touch and be more direct. I assume that the last two weeks has been spent working on that.

We have to kill games off though…

Wow….great atmosphere, large crowd, and charlton team who from k.o. showed how good we can be against a strong Millwall team.We were very pro-active putting them under pressure and being very very physical and dominating the game.It was a joy to watch and players showed gritcand determination to win everything.Kayne made a silly error and up to the sending-off he was great. I don’t feel his sending off had any bearing on them scoring as Millwall changed formation creating pressure on midfield.
I’m happy with a draw and Sheffield calls Saturday and current manager sacked ……what can go wrong? 😃

I thought that at the end of the game we lacked defensive ability in midfield and missed the presence on the bench of Anderson, because of his suspension, he would have been a better option than the extra defender at the back. Both Bree and Burke are lacking minutes so having both on the pitch was asking for trouble.
I agree with most of your comments, but although he pressed well Kelman very rarely got in positions to be dangerous. He is not technical enough to be a lone striker at Championship level he needs to be paired with Leaburn who would help bring him into the game. Campbell had a good game but he is a winger not a striker as NJ claims.
The oppositions have noted our set play tactics which rely on balls played beyond the back post for LJ to attack. Also our delivery at set plays has been poor.

I thought we started well and had the best of the first half with Carey outstanding. Unfortunately he is our only midfielder that has a goal threat…..we desperately need more creativeness in that area. Up front Kelman is struggling at this level at the moment. Last season his goals came mostly from ‘sniffing’ in the box, but this season, we don’t seem to be able to get the ball to him in goal scoring positions.. I would like to see NJ give Olaofe and Knibbs a couple of 90mins.

This was an exciting but nerve racking game but we can’t keep expecting to hold on to one nil lead, if we go ahead.
As we all saw it was a stupid tackle by Ramsey and think most knew he would get a second yellow and be sent off. Ramsey overall has been one of our best players but just had one of those days when he had a poor game, which happens to all players. Though that wasn’t the main reason we lost the game, as NJ implied, as yet again he made really poor subsitutions!

Kelman off for Leaburn absolutely fine, but to take off both Apter & Campbell and replace them for Bree & Burke ( two of his old Luton favourites) who are defenders was a joke, as also both can’t be fully match fit and are still getting over injuries, which NJ himself advised recently! When he already had a right sided defender in Costello, who cost £750,000 from Blackburn sitting on the bench and has been with Charlton from the start of the season and could have replaced Ramsey, but obviously NJ prefered Bree a last minute not fully fit loan signing instead? Plus surely either Knibbs or Olafe could have have been the replacement instead of Burke and assisted Leaburn, who was totally alone up front and given some support to cause Millwall to be a bit more cautious at the back, whilst also helping out the midfield to be more solid, were not even considered?

As it was, it was more or less one way traffic with both Bree and Burke not making any diffence and actually IMO weakening the team and we could see the inevintable happening, which all around where we sit were not surprised, when it did.

Whereas NJ’s counterpart at Millwall, saw, apart from Ramsey being sent off, which he said made no difference to his plans, took off one of his strikers and put on another midfielder, beides the other changes he made, who made a big difference and scored the goal!

At present, with NJ’s seemingly resistance to change formation, change certain players, we will continue to struggle to score more, if that, than one goal per game, which won’t help the cause. I am far from alone in this, as even Charlton supporters themselves, from various medias who report after the games, are all more or less now in agreement on this and also that subsitutions are made far too late.

I know its early days but it doesn’t take to much to suddenly find yourselves in the bottom three and then start really struggling, as both the Sheffield clubs are currently doing. As just one win with three points from three games is better than NJ saying we have only lost one out of three games with two draws, but then it’s only two points!

The next game against Sheffield Utd is one we must really be looking for an all out win and hopefully with a few goals to boost confidence, as they have lost every game so far and a few by heavy margins so moral must be at an all time low, but without change, I can see the best we will get is a draw. As similar to QPR game and last season we can’t seem to beat team’s who are at the bottom end of the division and currently on a poor run.
So let’s hope we can finally get past that hurdle with a good win.

Yes Mike we are on the same wavelength. I also thought that Oloafe would have been involved as players normally make special effort against their old clubs. The Cambridge game worried me as Kelman, Oloafe and Knibbs did not show any significant performances. Anderson, Fullah and Rylah all CAFC academy players were the pick. Rankin Costello also did not perform well.

I guess we all see different things. Our fans on social media can be idiotic sometimes and would bear caution if seeking any confirmation from these people.
I thought Ramsey was reckless but he has been outstanding. TC had a better game looked threatening, still needs to improve his final delivery. On deliveries , our set pieces were pretty poor. As mentioned earlier pretty predictable and we need to vary our delivery. Near post corners seem to be gone out of fashion?? Our final third play needs to be more penetrating and that comes with confidence.
I thought Carey had a good game and was pleased to see him get on the scoresheet. I think there is more to come from him. I thought Apter was less ineffective in this game as he was doubled up on. He did have a deflected shot that hit the crossbar.
Millwall were better in the second half and their forwards rotated across the frontline. Both Ramsey and Edwards were struggling with their floating forward. They were pressing and we were digging in. TC looked tired, played 2 games for Jamaica 🇯🇲 during the break and we know his defensive game is weak. So I was not surprised to see both TC and Apter being removed. I do agree that Olafe would have been a better option for TC, Bree did ok for me. He’s fit enough for that period of time, better defensively than Costello imo.
We go again on Saturday, let’s be clear there are no easy games in this league. We need to be on it every game and get behind the team.
Sheffield Utd will have the new manager bounce back.
We will be in that lower section of the league but i still believe out of the bottom 3 which is the main objective.
Our other promoted teams are also struggling with the step up in class.. and have spent a lot more on players. I think Parky will be nervous if results don’t improve for the Disney gang.
It will be a long trip to Sheffield but I going with more hope than I did when the fixtures first came out.
