Steve Thompson RIP

This is really sad news to wake up to today.

Steve Thompson, or Rambo as he was affectionately known, has lost his long battle with cancer aged 70. Steve was part of Lennie Lawrence’s brilliant promotion side when we were in exile at Selhurst Park.

That was the 1985/86 season and he also went on to play for us in the old Division One against some of the best strikers around at that time. In all he played 112 games for us in all competitions.

The Addicks bought Steve from Lincoln in August, 1985 for £25,000. Lennie also bought George Shipley from The Imps at around the same time and both of them were integral to the club’s success.

Steve also captained Charlton at Wembley in the Full Members Cup Final.

He was a lion of a defender with legs the size of tree trunks, always had time for fans and was one of my favourite players of that era.

Steve was born in Sheffield, and played for The Blades as well as managing them. It was at Lincoln where he spent the majority of his career playing and managing them.

He still lived in Lincolnshire where up until recently he was still a regular co-commentator on Lincoln’s games.

A proper old school defender who left lasting memories. Condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Rambo.

Very sad. He was a rock in defence. I think he was the player who flew over the advertising hording one game and was inches away from a massive nail going through his chest.
