Alex Mitchell moves to Plymouth on loan

Alex Mitchell has moved to Plymouth Argyle on loan for the season.

A very likable and a solid, non-compromising centre half, still only 23 Alex will do a good job for Argyle and I hope he gets plenty of game time.

Unfortunately for Alex, the Addicks squad has moved on quickly in quality since he arrived from Millwall after a season on loan at Lincoln during the summer of 2024. He featured 34 times last season, starting 26 L1 games.

I suspect 20-year old Zach Mitchell will become Nathan Jones squad back-up centre-half, which is a sign perhaps of the current divergence of the careers of the two Mitchell’s.

One thought on Alex Mitchell. The post match camera on The Valley pitch after the Watford game caught him hugging the players beaming from ear to ear after Knibbs late winner. I think that describes the sort of teammate and man he is.

The very best of luck in the west country, Alex.

After the last few games our defence is very solid even back to the semi finals against Wycombe and Leyton and now against Watford and Bristol to be honest I would have taken a draw against Watford and maybe a 0-1 defeat Bristol
But I think we do need quite a few defensive players to assist the way we play unless a new defender is coming in with more experience I think this might not be a great idea for us we need cover in a lot off areas if some of the first team players get injured and the one thing that bothers me is I think Conor Coventry has so much potential but he doesn’t seem to be playing to his level he reminds me of Claus Jensen as nothing happens for over an hour they a perfect cross just my opinion

Tend to agree with you. Good for Alex but does leave us a little light at the back bearing in mind AM has been on the bench the last two league games. Maybe Burke is fit?

Don’t really understand this, as Burke wasn’t fit when he joined plus got another injury in the pre season game he played in and looks like he will just be able to play around 30 mins, similar to Chucks, when he isn’t injured anyway! Really can’t understand why we continue to still buy these known injury prone players, who the hell does the medicals & fitness tests prior to a player joining, I thought they had sorted that issue out at last?
So theres only really beside Gilisphey & Zac Mitchell, who hardly played a first team game last season and this is a league higher, if a couple of centre backs get injured, which is pretty common!
Plus as you say CA he was on the bench for the last two games, so Jones obviously for those games preferred him to Zac Mitchell, so it leaves us very light if any injuries.

Zach Mitchell was playing in fhe SPL last season and had rave reviews. I saw him play against Celtic on TV and was fantastic, his performances were behind an uplift in St.Johnstone’s form. His loan was unfortunately curtailed by an injury.
Saying that is was surprising not to see him on the bench in the last 2 games and he seemed favourite to be sent out on loan again. I am hearing that Burke is back .. I would to think that there is a recall clause in the loan contract. Season long loans are something of a misnomer as clubs cancel them in the January window. So if Alex gets regular first team football then perhaps it is a good thing all round.

I think that the decision was probably made by Alex and, given his age and lack of recent game time, he has been allowed to go, as a matter of fairness. NJ would probably have preferred him to have stayed. He was very good for us in the first half of last season and in the pre-season friendlies. I guess, though, that NJ is happy enough to have Zac as back-up.

Was Alfie doughty never on the jones radar after Luton connection. Hate the idea of him doing well for that “other team”

I would have liked Doughty to return and I did mention that in a post a month or so ago. Wages would have been a problem as he was reported to be on £27,500 a week at Luton.

Given he is injury prone and on big wages, and see now he has broken down all ready with a hamstring injury.. probably we avoided one there ??

I think sadly Millwall have a much bigger budget than us and ours wouldn’t stretch to his salary expectations. Plus he is a Millwall fan.

I like Zach Mitchell and although he played well as a No.5 at St.J I don’t see him as a No.5 for us. He is more suited to the RHS of the back 3, he is better on the ground than the air, because he is slightly shorter than a normal 5. He has played in that role this preseason with Alex as the 5 and in the Stevenage game.
Talking of defenders I note the name Ezenwata in the U18 line-ups. Chizaram Ezenwata presumably an older brother was lost about 18 months ago to Chelsea hopefully for good compensation. He is very highly rated and featured with credit in the Chelsea U18s last season although in the U16 age group, sadly one that got away.

I would agree that he is RHS of back 3. Apparently he is 6ft 2, only an inch smaller than Jones and Alex Mitchell. That surprises me if I am honest. He is quicker that AM and technically better with his distribution.

Profiles on the CAFC website state ZM is 6’1”,
Lloyd Jones and Alex Mitchell 6’3” and Gillesphey 6’2”, which seems right to me.

Zach Mitchell played a few matches at right back last season before going on loan to St Johnstone so I assume he’s competition for the right sided centre-back role.

Realistically how many defenders do we need? We have ZM and Macauley Gillesphey plus the injured Reece Burke. For Alex Mitchell to get into the first team a couple of Lloyd Jones, Imari’i Bell and those ahead of him need to get injured/be suspended.

Regarding Alex, although a solid defender he’s a tad slow and never looked comfortable bringing the ball out of defence.
