James Brayne headhunted

Charlton’s set piece and first team coach James Brayne is leaving the club to take up a role with Sunderland.

James joins Régis Le Bris’ backroom staff ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season to lead their first-team’s set-piece coaching.

Brayne was credited with a complete turnaround in our set-plays. Frankly they were useless before he joined the club just after Nathan Jones in March 2024.

Good luck to him, success and good work attracts attention, it’s better that way and it’s something we haven’t been used to.

In Brayne’s place steps Danny Hylton, who had already secured a job as part of Jones’ coaching staff, but his job now becomes more defined.

That’s a loss. Hope he has left us with plenty of learned routines. The set piece goal on Sat was outstanding. Doherty blocked Jones marker and pushed him towards the post while Jones ran back into space. Meanwhile the keeper was pushed around on the goal line so he couldn’t attempt a trip to the far post. Leaburn left the penalty spot and lured 3 defenders to the near post leaving a space for Jones to head the far post cross into and Knibbs stayed where he was to score. No actual fouls but a heck of a lot going on and it all looked pretty coordinated to me.
