Joe Bennett has been training with Charlton and for the first time he put on a red matchday shirt today appearing as a 60th minute substitute in the 1-1 draw at Cambridge.
Bennett is a free agent and could provide both cover at left-wing-back plus add an experienced head and good counsel to the younger players in the dressing room next season.
Bennett is 35, but has played 350 league games at Premier League and Championship level and has three promotions under his belt including a L1 play-off victory the season before last (photo). He was known for his pace, but adapted his game as he’s got older. Scouting reports suggest good ball retention, defensive composure and an ability to carry to ball forward. He played 12 games for Oxford United last season.
I had better things to do today (like sat at a swim meet) but those that did watch the friendly said that Bennett fitted in pretty well. I don’t expect there is any rush, but he may turn out to be a low risk addition to provide back-up to Edwards and Bell.
I thought Bell played very well today, looked composed on the ball. I would like to see someone in to push or cover Campbell and have that pace as the option, and was not convinced that the trialist Joe Bennett offered that. He looked solid though in that defensive role. I thought apter looked good, certainly some pace and his deliveries were threatening. I liked Zak Mitchell’s game, good energy and read the game. Anderson looked busy, got caught out for their goal. I do wonder if the championship is a level too much for him currently. The pace and quickness of thinking goes up a level, and he could struggle. NJ does favour him as he has good energy, but that maybe not enough in the championship. There is certainly a lot of competition in midfield in this current squad. It was good to see leaburn getting game time in, we will need him, as firepower will be key.
Anyway, friendlies are what they are, still room for improvement from all players and Tuesday will be a different level again. Who knows maybe some debuts being made as well. Be nice to see Ramsey back as well.
