Gillesphey rewarded with new contract
I missed yesterday Macaulay Gillesphey nipping in at the far past to meet a new contract head on.
I’m pleased about this, very well deserved. Gillesphey signed a fresh 2-year contract plus a club option of a year.
As I’ve said before Macauley epitomized everything about the team’s turnaround last season. After the error at Blackpool, where he’d actually had a good game, he never looked back right up until he slammed in the free-kick on Wembley’s hallowed turf.
Even without that moment, he weighed in with some crucial goals and assists as well as becoming a vital part of our defensive machine.
It’s easy to forget that he played 54 games last season. He’s a good age and next season will be a big step up for him, but all of us hope that he continues his upward trajectory. Congratulations Macca.
He got a lot of flack from some supporters initially and unfairly IMO.
After the Christmas turnaround came, he barely put a foot wrong.
Have to admit I used to say he was an accident waiting to happen, but it was great to see him quietly get on with his business. Such an important player at the end.
He also won promotion with Plymouth as well.

Totally agree with you CA, with so many cockups the previous season as with a lot of the others in defence, I think most of us thought he would be moved on as many players were. But last season, give credit where its due, with a couple of exceptions he has played like a totally different player and definately helped us get promotion.
Though we really have to thank one particular player for this, Lloyd Jones, as without him we wouldn’t be where we are now in the Championship, as he has commanded and mastered the defence this season which has given Gilisphey and others, so much more confidence and play as a unit.
So we all have to be so grateful that Jones accepted a new contract and didn’t move elsewhere!
Yes he got some of our infamous so called fans boo-boys treatment. He bounced back to become a hero .. showing how shallow those so-called fans are.. he made some mistakes, but he came back stronger each game and formed a great partnership with Jones. He now goes down in Charlton folklore with his left foot free-kick at Wembley. Richly deserves a contract extension.
Supporters are very fickle and at all clubs but allowed a voice but well done Gillesphey.
