Sonny Carey signs from Blackpool

It has been a busy day at the training ground.

The Addicks announced the signing of a midfield 10 Sonny Carey from Blackpool. The 24-year old will join the club following the expiration of his contract at Blackpool on July 1st.

Carey came through the academy at his home town team Norwich, he then spent 2 years at Kings Lynn before Blackpool signed him in 2021.

He played 133 times for Blackpool, including two seasons in The Championship. He really excelled under Steve Bruce last season when he scored seven goals in the last eight games mostly playing behind the strikers or coming in from the left.

Blackpool fans say he is a strong ball carrier and likes to shoot from distance. The Tangerines made him a “fantastic offer” and Derby were our competition to sign Carey, but today he became our first signing of the summer.

Welcome Sonny.

A great shame about Small but very good news about Carey. We need a midfielder who can score 10 goals a season.

This signing really reminds me a lot of Nicky Bailey who did very well for us prior to that penalty miss.

Carey is a great signing in my opinion. I first saw him 5-6 years ago when he came on as a sub for Kings Lynn for the last 20 minutes or so in a NL game televised on BT Sport. I mentioned him to fellow supporters and whenever Blackpool matches are shown on EFL highlights I pay particular attention to Carey who reinforced my original opinion that he had a big future.
Although sad that Small has left, I am glad that is not Campbell. To me Small caught the eye but his stats are not as good as Campbell, fewer goals and assists. I think that he can be replaced without too much of a problem, as I said previously I think Doughty might be an option depending on his fitness and contract situation, he is too good for Div1.
Famewo was a good loanee for us a few years ago but has had severe injury problems throughout his career so I would steer clear. He is probably on the radar as a LHS defender, as competitor/cover for Gillesphey.
As Tenai Watson as been released Dijksteel, who has been released by Middlesborough could be an option as cover for RHS of the defence. He was outstanding in the U21s as the holding player in midfield but became a RB when given his chance in the first team and moved to Boro’ as a FB and as far as I know has never played in midfield in senior football. He would give us cover for Coventry as well as right side of defence. If his fitness is good I would try to sign him.

Some further thoughts on potential recruits. A potential winger that is worthy of consideration is Omari Patrick who plays for Tranmere. He was previously with AFC Wimbledon and Carlisle .You may remember that I keep an eye on Carlisle when I can because of family connections with the City. Carlisle were promoted from Div2 via the play-offs 3 years ago. Two players caught my eye, Patrick and Moxon. Patrick impressed while at Wimbledon and had a great season in a poor side at Tranmere, I think he would be worth a look as a squad player.
As we are in the Championship high quality loanees should be possible, 2 or 3 Premiership youngsters could make a significant boost to the squad.
