Nathan Jones signs new 5-year contract
Well that puts Cardiff City back in their box.
“Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that men’s first-team Manager Nathan Jones has signed a new five-year contract with the club, committing his future to the Addicks until the summer of 2030.” (more)
The thing I like most about this is that the owners and Gavin Carter have acted decisively and also ponied up to not only reward success but to message that they mean business.
Compare this to the actions of Roland Duchatelet towards Lee Bowyer and the coaching team in 2019.
Jones is marmite but he is our marmite and there is no denying how hard he has worked to build from a very, very low base a bedrock that we can all believe in. All Addicks fans have ever asked is for something to believe in and get behind.
Nathan Jones has done that.
Hopefully his coaching team will share in new deals. James Brayne, Stephen Henderson, Dave Huzzey and especially Curtis Fleming, who I think is the yin to Jones’ yang deserve equal credit.
It’s a good news Friday now let the summer transfer window begin.

Wonderful news
Fantastic news for fans and the future development of our club.
Nathan has managed to deliver an unbelievable season and credit where its due…the board and owners can now push us on to better and brighter things.
The Valley will see bigger crowds, better teams and the atmosphere will spur the team on…..let’s hope a large % of the 40,000 fans at Wembley attend games at The Valley next season.
I’m very excited about next season and the main priority must be to build a stronger squad and stay in the Championship..
COYRs
Ohhhh by the way…..I love marmite 😃
Haha. Me too 🥪
And the good news continues….
Its just made my day. I know next season is going to be tough, but I dont think I have been this excited and positive about Charlton since Chris Powell took us up. After that, the ownership was never stable really, never ambitious (no disrespect to Thomas S who saved us) and the football suffered as a result.
Now I am excited.
Great news and a real incentive for players looking to stay (or join).
I think crowds will improve and have written to the club to ask if they are planning a ‘membership scheme’. No point in me having a season ticket as I can’t go more than 5-10 times per season but a way to buy game by game before general on sale would be really handy.
This is absolutely the best news we as charlton fans have had for ages apart ftom promotion I dont mean to rain on anybodies parade and hopefully I don’t but is this a 5 year contract or a contract if we are to start losing come November will we sack nj let’s hope not we really do need to strengthen our squad in all areas I am really excited for the season let’s concentrate on staying up .. let the games begin good luck lads
Positivity from the owners who have moved quickly to repel any attempt to steal Jones away. Lets hope they move as quickly in the market to strengthen the squad…… I see there is a rumour of a Famewo return.
I think you are correct, more than anything else it suggests that the owners and senior management of the club are committed to success. It is a long (and no doubt very lucrative) contract, they are not . It suggest they are prepared to provide the necessary investment the club needs to survive and even excel in the Championship.
And a new player in already young midfield player sonny and rumours Morgan fox might be coming back it seems things are going to be a bit different since Charlie and Andy have gone thank god
Good news…nothing says stability is being put at the core of the team than a five year deal.
We’ve signed our first player too- Sonny Carey, from Blackpool and I assume we’ve paid a transfer as he had a year left on his contract.
If you look at the signing photo, there’s the first sign of a Reebok logo on a bit of Charlton kit, not a playing top but an attractive looking hoodie.
I think that Sonny Carey is a great signing. I like spotting promising players and I saw Carey come on as a sub for Kings Lynn in a NL game 5 or 6 years ago and he caught my eye. The possibility of resigning Morgan Fox, however, does not excite me. Spend some money and try to resign Doughty who is too good for Div1. Dijksteel has been released by Middlesborough and would de a good signing if he is fit. In the U21s he was outstanding as the holding player in midfield, as far as I know he has never played that position in league football. Middlesboro used as him as a wing back or right side of a back 3. he would be a good replacement for Tenai Watson in the squad to cover those positions and also cover for Coventry in midfield.
CA Hope you are right as his original three year contract appeared to be a very good one, even according to Jones himself, so can’t really see why he has been offered a brand new one for 5 years after just one year promotion, which by the skin of his teeth really scraped in! Surely you wait to see how he copes and proves himself in the Championship in the first year, which is a much harder league now with so many clubs getting parachute monies, before offering another even longer term contract! For as sure as eggs are eggs, if we start losing and playing poorly and are around the bottom few clubs, the fans will be on his back and if we did, sincerely hope not, go straight back down, as “chapmancraig88” indicated, he would be leaving the club albeit with a hefty payoff!
Well the start of transfers doesn’t look to promising, have just lost Small to Preston and are looking to sign Famewo who was loaned to us twice back in 2020/21 seasons with the option of a permanent transfer which wasn’t taken up, none of us thought he was anything special then and that was in league 1. Was then bought by Sheffield Wednesday in 2022 and played just 65 games in three seasons only playing 13 games last season as having a serious injury, which he also had at Luton back in 2016 & 2017 when Jones was in charge only playing 3 games in each season! Another injury prone player, who looks like the perfect player to take Chucks place on the physio couch! 🙂
Then we are also after Morgan Fox now 31 year old, who was very good for us but only played 46 games in two years and is being let go by QPR.
But at least the first signing of Sonny Carey appears to be a decent signing but if the other two also join, they are no better than what we have already got!
So the concerning thing is all three were out of contract so on freebies, so sincerely hope this isn’t going to be like last season of scrambling around to find cheap options, as it won’t work like last year as the Championship is a much tougher league!
Lets hope the Owners are aware funds are needed if we are to stay up and we need better quality players to compete in this league!
Good god Mike # is still moaning and belittling NJ’s amazing achievements this year, luckily the owners see things more clearly. And on top of that thinks Morgan Fox was decent, even compared with Joe Gomez in the same team the two were very clearly poles apart in ability. In # NJ we most clearly trust, unlike Mike #. 😡
Never understood the obsession with ex-players but I would take Doughty.
Steve like a lot of supporters I think Fox was a quite a decent player when he played for us, but not now and at 31 years old is just not good enough, yet you say he wasn’t that good when he played for us but now appear quite happy to trust NJ’s judgement, who you trust as the Mesiah, to take him on!!!
You must also think Ahadme, NJ’s most expensive signing and Charltons for quite a few years was a great signing and better than a small forward, who NJ wasn’t keen on!
Please get real, whilst I like most other supporters are estatic at Charlton getting promotion, but will admit if honest we were lucky to do so, as we had more poor games than we did good, and it was only the defence and really Godden up front who just got us there! So as I have indicated more or less with the current team we will be relegated, which most of the pundits have all implied, without some really decent better players brought in, which will cost the owners and the likes of Famewo and Fox on NJ’s list will make no difference as they are no better than the very average players we have already on our books!
I am only stating the hard facts, without an improvement in the quality of players brought in, no matter who is in charge NJ or whoever, there is only one way we would be going and it isn’t upwards, as it’s not rocket science to see!
Good news about nj bad news thierry small has gone good news sonny Carey Albie seems to be still half decent mogan fox not so sure he is as good as he was 10 yrs ago he was quality though
Very disappointed Small has gone, especially to a club that were so close to being relegated last season……they obviously offered him more money. I am trusting that is not going to be the marker for this transfer window, and that the owners step up to the plate.!!!
I think Fox was in the U21s when NJ was the coach and he may have been at Stoke when NJ was their manager, so another player he knows ( not good!). Famewo is injury prone and would not in my opinion be a good signing. Now we are in the Championship we are in a better position to get higher quality players in on loan like we did a few years ago. Chapel probably had players in his sights for Luton but now they are in Div1 they may no longer suit, so they could be suitable for us to consider.
