Birmingham City 1 Charlton Athletic 0

Gaining a result today was more in hope than expectation, so I’m only really disappointed that we weren’t able to muster some chance potentials at the end.

The Blues were worthy winners following their 1st half display but in the end it was only an error that separated the two teams.

Throwing money at the situation doesn’t always work, and even Ipswich finished runners up to Plymouth, but you have to expect Birmingham to exceed Wolves record L1 points tally of 103.

Mind you, I don’t remember Wolves, Plymouth, Ipswich or Chris Powell’s side being such masters of the dark arts. Birmingham are heads and shoulders above the rest of this division and it was pretty distasteful to see them dropping like flies, holding their heads as if they’d be smacked on it by a baseball bat and burning through time.

We suffered through the 1st half, but the game was more even, if scrappy, in the second 45. Jones was brave with his subs, but I really felt this was a game for Aneke and Leaburn, although no blame should be laid at his door for starting with an unchanged XI.

Nonetheless I do think Gilbert and Leaburn should have been our first point of call and Aneke should have seen some minutes.

Defensively we held our own but lost the battle in midfield unable to retain or recirculate possession. Birmingham press like a team that should be playing at a higher level, which meant we just couldn’t get going and ultimately weren’t able to find that one chance to grab a late equalizer.

Elsewhere today the results didn’t fall our way, but there are a lot of games to go and the more clubs that join the play-off fray, the more points they’ll take from each other and maybe even pull Wrexham and Stockport back into the mix.

We move on, hopefully not too disheartened and I hope Addicks’ fans got home safely, they did us proud today.

🎙️“We were brave, we were bold but late on we just probably needed a bit more guile, a little bit more cleverness to create that clear-cut chance and so we didn’t. It just showed today that we were probably lacking a little bit of spark because we’ve been excellent, but today we just weren’t and we needed to be at our best today..” – Nathan Jones

Sorry but Charlton were never in the game You had 1 shot in the 75 min that was more like a back pass than a shot in the whole game Only attempt in the whole game was to stop us playing Then you put 2 big lumps on up top and your backline pumped every ball over the top Sunday Parks League Football at its finest. I am sorry but playing that kind of football you will not end up in the play offs As for your manager did he actually watch the game Hate managers that talk crap about fine margins. When you were out played Out Classed and never offered any threat the whole game. Our keeper could have got a deck chair out and sat out the game He needs to come into the real world. FEA. KRO

I too thought we needed Chuks to throw his weight around a bit and create that bit of chaos. Just one late, slightly jammy goal and we’d have gained a point. Miles and DK had half chances but nothing more.

The match showed us where we are – not at the top table but not that far off it. When things calmed down Birmingham seemed to be happy settling for a one goal win, while we held our own but without really threatening them.

From here we need I think around 25 points from the last 15 games to make the play-offs, that’s achievable, but it means not just keeping that recent run going but putting one or two teams to the sword and getting our goal difference up. The teams immediately around us need those points too – but they have a much better GD.

Let’s face it we played below par and little doubt that Birmingham had the edge on the day.One small error from Coventry allowed them to score a well taken goal.We can build on this defeat as its all about small margins in games and mentally we are in a positive condition.

If we can continue to demonstrate repeating recent performances we can reach the playoffs and who knows maybe more…..in Nathan we trust !!!!

For a team which is supposedly the form team in league one Charlton offered very little. Fine margins? It was a 1-0 thrashing. I think we managed the game very well without expending too much energy with another important game on Tuesday. Dark arts? I did see Keshi get elbowed and some roughing up of Laird. There was a bit of time wasting at the end. Every team does it but you’re quite happy when your team does it. So it’s a bit rich complaining when it’s done to you.

A 1-0 thrashing was a term coined by a Sky commentator many years back which implies a game where one team should have won by a lot of goals because of the number of shots and dominance they had but only won 1-0.

no game Tuesday I am aware of. So why did Birmingham bother with the dark arts if everyone’s saying they were that good and we were not? Something really needs to be done to stop all this nonsense which is spoiling the game. And no, I don’t like it when we do it either.

This one was always going to be a bonus if we got anything. They’re top quality, as they should be when you’re spending that sort of money. We were undone by a £20mill striker.

We go again next week, back to a winning mentality asap. Jones has done well to turn this ship around as quickly as he has. Young side, with bags of potential. Confidence is going to be key in the next couple of games.
