Jones’ post match interview

At Saturday’s final whistle I think most Addicks were disappointed but probably none “raging off their nut” like the team manager.

Nathan Jones’ interview with Terry Smith post game was very much the talking point amongst my mates last night as his anger seemed a little misplaced.

We certainly didn’t resemble the team that has shown much promise, and lacked the organizational discipline that Jones pledges, yet we weren’t rubbish and if not for another 30-yard scorcher I felt at that point in the game we were beginning to reel Reading in.

I missed the clear penalty as everyone did that was watching Charlton TV as the feed went out for a few minutes, but we were going to lose a game sometime, and Reading are a very decent young side, with a good manager.

Incidentally Jones worked with Ruben Selles at Southampton which might have added extra angst.

Jones’ immediate post match reaction was rage and disbelief firstly at the general performance and the “absolute disgrace” of a second goal conceded, but he was especially exasperated by the first half energy levels where he alluded to maybe the pre-match preparation not being as it should be.

In the Louis Mendez interview he talked about getting to the hotel late, and not eating at the right time. We know that Jones is a perfectionist and makes high demands. Hopefully the coach driver wore a crash helmet on the way home!

Jones said he will deal with it, both the defensive cock-ups and the preparation, and for me the most important thing is that he and his team reacts in the correct way next game.

As for Jones’ state of mind, I think this is who he is. You can google plenty of similar interviews that he’s done previously with his heart firmly worn on his sleeve.

For me as long as he doesn’t make it personal and has total buy in from the players where they want to join him on his journey of perfection and ultimate hard work, then I’m buying it.

I mean we could always go back to Michael Appleton’s impassive and solemn interviews or Nigel Adkins talking in riddles.

I used to look forward to hearing from Lee Bowyer, although he did sometimes cross the line, but I want our manager to feel fan’s pain, and give an honest assessment not just throw-away jargon that doesn’t inspires or galvanizes anyone.

Precisely 200% agree and yes it does show that he cares but what about us the supporters though he did mention but what he forgot to say is that he and he and his new coaching staff have to look at themselves too and it they who put the same team out the last 4 games.
Don’t get me wrong I am not knocking Jones but for a wonder first goal and no one could do much about it, apart from closing him down ha ha

Reading did their homework and the same team the last 4 games tells it all but at times he crosses the line but no one care and loves the club more than the magnificient supporters, who get considerably less than any of them and just saying!!

Also, he needs to change it and the worry is now the attack and only Godden has got a goal and frankly and in particular Adheman (spelt wrong but apt) is not looking good at all and that partnership is not working.
IMHO it seems he does not trust the bench to play more than 15 or 20 minutes and yes we got away with it the first 3 games.
The worrying thing is are we already carrying injury hit players and the article re Methven and mentioned it in post but what are we to believe and wonder if Jones would have got the backing, if we did not literally give May away and put him out to dry and stating it was Jones’s decision to let him go.
IMHO the jury is well out on him and very Snidy Scott and yes tbf they have pumped money in but only used the May’s money to sign some decent players but our no 9 is just not up to it and another recent one from Ipswich and I know very early days but the current 2 up top is simply not working.

COYR sort it and at least change it around or put subs on earlier but as mentioned above it appears 3 or 4 can not be manage 15 or 20 minutes.

Alfie May leading goalscorer in the Championship. That says a lot doesn’t it .
we badly need a regular goalscorer up front.

Money should have been spent on a decent striker. It is early days yet, but it is obvious to one and all, we haven’t got one presently.

He does seem very passionate, but he mentioned a couple of players by name in the interview which I really don’t think is a good thing to do.

Passion or feigned passion to cover his arse?

With the way we are set up we aren’t going to create more than a handful of chances so we have to take them when they come. Luke Berry had a great chance in the first half and TC put in a cross that Ahadme could/should have slid onto – but he didn’t read the move and hung back and missed the opportunity and that was basically it.

Our general set up is to defend and play aggressively, concede possession and employ the high press etc and then try and grab something. We mostly did play well but came up against a well drilled team who had done their homework on us. As I mentioned in another post we started with the same XI/formation as in every other league match (bar two changes) and so perhaps we needed to have done one or two things differently.

The move for Reading’s first goal could have been cut out, but it still needed a great finish. The second I’m more disappointed with – players not picked up and an easy cross was allowed to get into the danger area and it resulted in a goal.

I don’t mind NJ’s passion, we won’t get out of this league easily, every manager reacts differently. You could also have mentioned Ben Garner’s careful analysis of why we didn’t cut out crosses which led to goals that put me in mind of stable doors being shut but only after the horse had bolted.

    A reaction is what’s needed now…

Oh yes, the textbook responses of Bern Garner. How could I forget. Better in the classroom than in the dugout.
