Southgate resigns. Who is next?

“I’m not a believer in fairy tales but I’m a believer in dreams.”

So nearly. Thanks for everything Gareth, and time to take a rest, and wait until Erik ten Hag gets the sack.

Graham Potter and Eddie Howe appear to be getting the most likes, and there is not a talent pool bristling with options, and I personally would rather stay English despite the sparsity of top level Premier League managers available.

I do wish the top clubs would give more chances to Englishmen, there are just six starting the new season in the Premier League, and two of those got promoted.

The FA tried all the permutations, mostly failing, before landing on Gareth Southgate, who was being groomed in the U21’s, so I would continue with that recipe and plump for Lee Carsley.

Carsley has operated within ‘the system’ for a long time and won the European Under-21 Championship last summer.

He should take credit for furthering the international platforms of players such as Anthony Gordon, Jarrad Branthwaite and Cole Palmer.

Also appealing to me is that he worked at Brentford with their development squad and the Bees have spawned a lot of talented coaches, and then was with Manchester City and their Under-18’s.

He spent some time with Birmingham City’s Under-23s, and in 2020 joined the FA.

Carsley had a very good playing career and might even be an option for an interim to prove himself, or wait for the ‘right’ person to become available.

This approach has worked handsomely for Spain with Luis de la Fuente and with Argentina and Lionel Scaloni, the two current best teams in the world.

Whoever it is, it will be a tough act to follow.

Hard to follow!!!! Southgate has won NOTHING. We should have won at least one of the European cups. Second is never success in cup competitions.

A tougher act than the 17 England managers (permanent or otherwise) who preceded him anyway. Robson and Venables aside.

I think sometimes you can be in a job for too long and show loyalty to players you have worked with over a significant period. Comments on your previous post after the game mostly highlighted that Kane was underperforming and should have been replaced earlier in matches or the system changed to give him a co-striker as support. This is also my view and I found it frustrating that Kane got so many minutes. Although he scored 3 goals, 2 were penalties and the other from a set play. In open play he was generally ineffective. To play as the lone striker was asking too much

The new manager will need time to impose his system on the squad. I have no particular choice for the role but would favour an English candidate.

Lee Carsley would be the left-field choice, although he had a good playing career his experience as an actual manager is virtually non-existent, he has a few spells as caretaker manager here and there. It might just be a Les Reed situation, good coach, poor manager. I’d rather we didn’t find discover his managerial limitations in this job. You need a thick skin to be a manager and experience in dealing with the media, big clubs etc.

Personally Graham Potter or Eddie Howe are maybe better options, they have had premiership managerial experience and the former is available…both are British and know the players and understand the culture.

I hope whoever comes in has the wisdom to build on what exists, we have some good young players coming through and maybe we need a rejig rather than a complete overhaul.

I’m pleased that Harry Kane is going to carry on for two more years – he looked a bit tired and lethargic and the team set up didn’t help him. We have pace on one wing (Saka) but could have done with some on the other (Gordon?) and maybe a support runner – someone like Ollie Watkins to stretch defences, he was a bit too easy to mark out of matches.
