Thierry Small worries unfounded

A little bit of pre-transfer window season angst amongst some Addicks surrounding Thierry Small.

Nathan Jones was 100% behind Small having his contract mutually cancelled by Southampton and being offered a short term deal at The Valley just as he was signing his own deal with the club.

That deal had the optional year giving club and player some security. That one year extension has been rubber stamped and now the club and player will discuss a longer contract.

I thought Small was our best player under Jones playing in 14 of his 16 games in charge. Still only 19, Small is a real athlete and whereas some players that show up in SE7 are not or never fit, Small started every match once he was selected at Bolton away and was only substituted in one game.

Rumours, unfounded, were circulating that clubs were checking in on him with his agent before he signed the extension, including Spurs apparently.

The fact is, he will be a Charlton player next season, and I am excited to see more of him. He certainly looked like he enjoyed himself during his spell.

Nonetheless if Small and any others are being tracked by Spurs et al at the end of next season then that can only have meant we might have finally got things right on the pitch.

He may start the season with us, but will he end it as a Charlton player?

It seems that several clubs are interested in him including Spurs and I assume one or two others might pop out of the woodwork if he doesn’t sign an extension. Realistically we’ll have to listen to offers in January if he only signs on for the one year option we have on him.

We made a stinging loss last season and no doubt we’ll make one this coming year so getting some cash for a player that we didn’t develop would come in handy.
