Gillingham 2 Charlton Athletic 0
Pathetic. And even more pathetic that we didn’t show any kind of response or pride in the 2nd half.
Any thoughts Andy? Maybe knock out another video?
I don’t know why we are surprised, we have become accustomed to these dreadful cup performances (that’s the third defeat to a League Two side this season). We may as well have let Cray Valley give Gillingham a game rather than embarrass ourselves and the 1,600 plus fans who had to endure it in the cold.
One shot on target, less possession and we were well beaten by a Gills side better, hungrier and more organized all over the park.
Obviously Macauley Bonne scored cupping his ears to the Charlton fans and a familiar defensive circus gave them a second, yet it was the total lack of fight or care in the 2nd half that annoyed me more.
I was banging on about mediocrity earlier in the week, well that was beyond mediocre.
We have five league games this month to make sure we can stay in touch before the fantastical January transfer window.
MoM: Jones may be the only player who could get in Gillingham’s side after that performance!
Appleton of my eye: What happened to his divisiveness during games. Making changes at half-time, foreseeing tactical and player changes early in the 2nd to affect games?
Elsewhere: Well Maidstone made it through to the 3rd Round.

What a waste of money…sitting in an open stand in the cold and watching a performance that lacked commitment, endeavour, pride and tactical awareness.
How can anyone be impressed with what was happening on the pitch ?
There can be no excuses for the performance.
It would just be the icing on the cake if Gillingham draw a top Premiership club next round…..they made us look like a pub team.
Perhaps it is better that we are not in the draw if it were to be a top Premiership club (Crystal Palace perhaps?)…
I feel for you Chris. No excuses for a lack of commitment and endeavour.
The only player who can hold his head up yestetday was Louie Watson…I bet he was embarrassed by others in the team.
Out of the League cup. Out of the FA cup. All before Christmas.
Nowhere near Play-off standard performances in the league.
Yet another joyful season for the long suffering supporters.
Never mind we’ve still got the two-bob shithouse trophy to look forward to.
Another dismal performance. Charlton really know how to disappoint. They’ve made it an art form.
always enjoy reading your blog. A lot of truths in there. Perhaps Appleton is not the man for the job. Major re-investment needed.
Thanks Michael. Maybe he isn’t, but the cycle of hiring and firing managers has to stop. Scott et al dealt Appleton his hand and I feel he at least deserves a transfer window.
I think you are right. See what the season’s end brings.
Appleton just doesn’t take the FA Cup seriously – I suspect training this week wasn’t very rigorous.
Maybe pressure from ‘above’ to focus on league games and getting up the table ?
I’d think ‘above’ would want a plum home tie.
Too much BS full stop an they think we are stupid angry beyond words
Just awful…the day started badly with the news about Miles Leaburn and got progressively worse with Macauley Bonne scoring.
But we’ve been rubbish in the FA Cup for as long as I can remember, bar the odd season, plus we’ve had a habit of getting ko’d by teams in the divisions below us. Stockport last year for example.
We were beginning to play well after the first month – but since the international break we’ve lost our mojo. Three games all placed below us – and we’ve looked unconvincing in all of them.
Despite a few changes – May back playing at 10 etc there was no ambition or sign that we could win or wanted to win. Tedic has waited for his chance at centre-forward but in two matches there barely looks like a pro-footballer.
We need a reaction…
If anyone thinks the January window will be any different, or better than the last six or seven, I think you will be disappointed . We are are club that now relies on players that cost sod all, or are on loan for six months. None of whom will have the ability, drive, loyalty or experience to get anywhere near the play-offs. Here’s to another year of dross.
Spot on 30000 per cent agreed
Totally agree ……oh what a circus !!!
