Dean Holden sacked

Rumours started surfacing an hour or so ago and have been confirmed now by both Rich Cawley and Louis Mendez that Dean Holden and other backroom coaching staff have been sacked.

Holden managed the club for just 30 league games, and just 5 this season.

As others have said particularly after yesterday this football club of ours is an absolute cess pit of mis-management and poor decisions from top down. It doesn’t matter who plays, manages, coaches or owns us the culture of the football club stinks.

I liked and admired Holden like many, probably most Addicks, but questions have got louder over his tactical abilities into this new season.

However, Holden, who was the owners ‘man’ has not been backed in the transfer market and 5 games is no time to make a judgment call, and now we go into the final few days of the transfer window with no manager or coaching staff for any proposed new signings to talk to!

Coincidently Lee Johnson, known well by Charlie Methven, was sacked by Hibernian today.

Let’s hope it’s not Johnson, it would be pretty universally disliked I imagine.
I’m extremely sceptical of Mr salmon chinos and the conglomerate ownership that lives in the shadows. However they have surprised me a few times already with May, Hector, Camara and Taylor. Many are in meltdown on our forums, some suggesting there’s no money, it’s all a scam , it’s a multi year plan of trying to get the costs down. We’ve bid for the likes of Nombe or we only offered enough knowing they would rebuff.
I don’t know the truth but the next management appointment and who comes in as players this week will tell us much.

Just read the bland and cut and paste comment from Rodwell.
Total lack of respect….cold and he needed to say that he was part of appointing Dean in the first place.
Throw him under the bus Rodwell !!!!

Agree Chris. That is an appallingly crude and blasé few words.

I look at my Charlton and think how can it all have gone so wrong since the days of Curbishley? Look at Brighton, Brentford, Crystal Palace, even Millwall (FGS): we were above all of them back then, in some cases two divisions above. How did it all unravel so badly and more to the point, how will it now unravel further? I thought Adkins and Holden were decent enough chaps, though I never took to formulaic Garner, but I don’t think Holden has been treated fairly. This is not my Charlton.

It can hardly be seen as a shock five defeats in six. Lost the last four consecutive league games, out of the EFL cup at the first attempt.
Sure the team aren’t good enough, but nor was Dean’s management.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Persuade Curbishley to take the helm again. Even if only on a monthly contract. His love for the club still shows. He has the nous to stabilise the situation.
If we get some other novice or washed-up manager the cycle will continue.

Bad start to the season, but a soulless and short-sighted decision. He seemed like a great guy and I am sure it would have come round soon. Now we have new person, wrong squad, ‘time to bed in’ etc, and another season gone probably.

I know CA. I was so angry last night. I didn’t like the 3 at the back either. But sack him? And yes, all fans appear to be the same these days – even that lot down the road are at it after their over-achievement last season they are moaning about rowett.
I still feel sad this morning but he is better off out of it. Good luck to him.

I sincerely wish Dean and the coaching staff all the best for the future and maybe they will find success as we plumet into league 2.
I personally know how much Dean loved Charlton and everything he did was to help but sadly let down again by the owner’s and the new management at the Valley.
Hang your heads down you’ve acted in a sad and unprofessional manner.
How can any fan be impressed with the owners and Rothwell and Methven???????
I can see gates plummeting and fans walking….

So, another one bites the dust and the pantomime that is Charlton Athletic rumbles on. That decision was always lurking in the shadows given four losses out of five and our worst start for 33 years. Who now, is going to pick up the poison chalice, inheriting a disjointed squad, and a conglomerate that refuses to spend decent money at the helm ?

How do some people describe Charlton as a “Big Club”? We will only have that status when someone comes along who can buy back our ground and training ground and have the financial clout to truly invest in the club and quality players.
Does anyone know Sir Jim Ratcliffe?, he is unlikely to get Man Utd so point him our way and get rid of the no-hopers who are steering our ship onto the rocks again!

Rights or wrongs of sacking Holden, IMO he had to go whether now or later. Holden like a couple of the other previous managers are very decent people, but unfortunately when things start to go really wrong they just don’t have the know how or experince to change things around. You only have to look at Holden after the last home game, when Port vale hit those two goals in quick succession, he just sat there bemused and hadn’t a clue what to do, he looked absolutely lost.

When things start to go wrong we blame the manager, the rubbish & injury prone players we keep signing, the tactics the owners for lack of money put in etc, but the real issue to me is, and this is the owners or whoever advises them, since Roland took over, we always seem to get in an inexperinced manager who was either a good coach somewhere or who has tried once at management and failed. Charlton need to put there hands in ther pocket and get in a manager, who has performed and proved themselves and has a good solid track record over several years, not just one season in a lower league, has previously been a good coach, or was good many years ago but is not up to speed with the game now!
We can’t keep on getting in all these cheaper options in just to save money, hoping they will work out, as it hasn’t!

The Owners need to put their hands in their pockects to get in a Manager who really knows these lower divsions, below the Premier league, how to get out of them, what sort of players that are needed to get out of these leagues and is also use to getting the full backing and respect of the players, plus they need to supply the funds required to do this, as otherwise we will be back to square one again!

I am not surprised by the sacking of Dean Holden, even if he was liked by the fans. Neither am I particularly effected by the “we are not that club” statement of CAFC Supporters Trust. We have become that club just like many other football clubs by the actions of their management. Gone forever are the days when managers like Alan Curbishley enjoyed 15 year terms with a football clubs, now they barely survive 4 defeats in a row. The question I ask is “Why offer manager’s 3 year contracts with this type of football philosophy to terminate their contracts soon after? I read recently that Charlton has gone through 17 managers since Curbishley days, an average of 1 per season. Given that statistic why would anyone want to manage for only one season. It takes more than a season to build a winning team.
