Alfie May-be
It looks as if all is not lost in the chase for Alfie May. Ever reliable Rich Cawley wrote today that the Addicks are moving closer to a deal for the Cheltenham man.
A fee in the range of £250-300,000 has been agreed but it sounds as if the structure of how that will be paid is still to be ironed out. That presumably due to the takeover.
Personal terms don’t seem to be an issue and as people have written in my comments, it is understood that May really wants the move.
Local lad May fell into the non-league circuit after coming through Millwall’s youth team. He bounced around a variety of south-east clubs before hitting a golden streak at Hythe Town in the 8th level of the pyramid and signed his first professional contract with Doncaster aged 23.
May was a regular starter for Donny over four seasons, three in L1 but was not a regular scorer. After moving to Cheltenham in January 2020 dropping a division but helping them get promotion goals became more frequent, culminating in the past two L1 seasons when he hit 43 goals for a team in the lower half of the table
News of the club attempting to push the May deal over the line also raises the question of how serious an injury Miles Leaburn has.

I do hope the Alfie May transfer goes through as we are desperate to get a goal scoring forward on the books. He sounds as if he should fit the bill for us and wants to play for us. Fingers crossed CA
The Leaburn injury should not be a factor in the Alfie May situation as May is not a No.9 he is surely more of a replacement for Rak-Saki. I think May tends to play on the left but Campbell and Blackett-Taylor can play on either side, so shouldn’t be a problem if we play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 and could play as second striker if we play 4-4-2 or 3-5-2. We need cover for Leaburn as his injury record over the last 3 seasons is not good. Sam Smith ex Cambridge or Burstow on loan could be be possible answers.
Delighted that both Laqueretabua and Kedwell have signed pro contracts as they are players of great potential.
The signing of Josh L and Kedwell are further evidence of a great crop of youngsters.
This has to be the right contract for him – I see echoes of Lyle Taylor here, he also had a start at Millwall which didn’t work for him and into non-league he went and then slowly he fought his way up. Alfie May is about the same age as LT was when he came here and like him I doubt he earned that much over his career before arriving at SE7. I can see why he’s looking at other clubs and his agents are talking up Derby, Wrexham, Gillingham and even Bristol Rovers.
Cheltenham owe some of the money to Doncaster who are on for a profit share so the deal also has to be right for them.
I’d like to see Alfie at Charlton – I just hope the deal doesn’t get screwed up over the technical details.
The Miles Leaburn situation is worrying, with Chuks injured and needing the cotton wool treatment I doubt that either will play this weekend v Dartford and neither might not get risked in pre-season (assuming they return to fitness). Other than that there’s Daniel Kanu and err….
This maybe a stretch but I also see echoes of Clive Mendonca..
Please be assured CA….Alfie WILL be our player very very soon….
My source is very very accurate….just twiddle those thumbs till final hurdles are done.
Chris – you have backed this whole way 🙂
The two clubs have agreed a fee, Alfie has agreed a lower wage and it should happen within the next 48 hours
Really hope May signs. I remember thinking the same thing when we signed Clive Mendonca, I’d seen him before and he’d always played well against us, and Alfie May reminds me of him. I live in Cheltenham now, and have seen him a few times including the last game of the season against us, scored a great goal and was a real pain all game. He’ll do a great job for us if we get him.
My nephew has just confirmed Alfie May done deal
As Stevie Wonder sang “signed, sealed delivered I’m yours !”
Welcome Alfie and hope you can do the business at Charlton
