Barnsley 3 Charlton Athletic 1

I like Ben Garner, he talks thoughtfully and honestly, but he came across uneasily post match tonight.
10 league games, 2 wins and 1 clean sheet, yet an average of around 60% of possession and a total of 4,000 passes. It’s not working Ben.
Not your fault, but sadly the buck stops with you and you have to pick a team that plays to our strengths. Back to basics. Clean sheet, stick Dobson in front of the back four, play two up front, and not Rak-Sakyi.
10 games is lot of people’s barometer for the season. If so the outlook looks dark and thundery. If the budget is really top four Thomas, then what an earth are you paying these L2 sluggers?
Full disclosure. I was on a plane so I missed today’s game… I know, aren’t I the lucky one, but it sounded dreadful despite the odd moments of ‘good football.’ I may not myself be Pep, but passing sideways, clown-like defending and never looking like scoring will not get many points. It will not keep you in a job either.
I’m have long questioned Sandgaard’s blueprint and egotistical and autocratic style, but come on Ben, back to basics.
Ben Garner: “Football is played in the two boxes. Between the two boxes we are good but we have to be better at both ends of the pitch. That’s my responsibility, I’m not putting that on anyone else. It is my responsibility to improve it.”
Stats (CAFC first): Possession – 60% / 40%; Passes – 506 / 350; Accurate passes – 421 / 258; Shots (on target) – 12 (1) / 9 (3)
Bang on. All very worrying, as you wonder where the next 3 points will come from. The reckless failure in replacing Washington and Davison is glaring. They better change something up and quick…..
I feel that Ben is not helping himself and his press conference indicates that the team are all over the place….confused play, confidence low and not the progress fans expected.
Ben bemoaned that the funds promised by TS were swallowed up by having to pay Swindon for his release and that of his backroom staff.
Why did we let competent and loyal backroom staff go such as Jason Euelle ?
We face Oxford next and I fear that Ben’s days are numbered as we all know how TS operates.
I understand that TS was at the you tube game at The Valley today….26000 fans who watched a game with 13 goals…pre match entertainment and an atmosphere not witnessed at the Valley for years…..I suspect TS will find some way to harness ideas for use at our home games. I bet a lot of income was generated with food and drink sales.
I really hope TS will not dig out his guitar again pre-match !!!!
Why an earth would the owner of Charlton Athletic be at some weird You Tube game and not at Oakwell?
Or was he scouting?
Mate you was supposed to be hunkered down with a few beers enduring this with the rest of us???
If we’re gonna be crap at least chuck a couple up top and why not have a back four with a bit of protection now there’s an idea.
Looking enviously Orient, Leyton f***ing Orient what have we become.
😁 I know. To make it up I will watch next week’s game twice!
John Gy, our season is over already…..with 75% of it still to go. Garner is sadly a one trick pony with no plan b or c to change things when clearly needed. He has round headed players playing out of position in square holes and his ‘system’ clearly isn’t working.
Well done Sandgaard, another summer cock up moving us marching closer to division 2, but no doubt you’ll come up with more crap ideas from the vacuous rubbish you witnessed at the Valley yesterday to entertain the ever shrinking home support.
Thank goodness I have given up going to games this season, at least I’m spared all of that rubbish….
I get fed up to the back teeth with having to leave negative comments on several sites posted by Addick’s supporters, but for the last two or three years, true supporters of CAFC have had very little to be positive about.
Today was yet another miserable performance yielding nil points.
We are now a quarter of the way through the new season and we are averaging a point a game. If we continue on that track we will finish with around 38-40 points….a bottom three total last season.
The new regime, or at least the style of play of the new regime, is not working with the players we have available .
As much as I wanted to back Ben Garner when he was appointed, my patience is starting to wain, and he has given me no confidence in his after match comments recently either.
As for the owner, the silence is deafening !!!!
You can be sure that when the tide turns, and it will, Ben’s head will be for the chop and the main architect of this mess – Teflon Thomas – will be the one swinging the axe. Yet it is the egotistical TS who is responsible for what we are seeing. He refuses to learn the lessons of the (recent) past, listen to advice, or appoint an experienced CEO. Most if all, he fails to give BG the tools to complete the job. TS is taking this club out of L1, that’s for sure, but not in the direction that we thought.
A lot sense spoken here. I understand Ben Garner’s philosophy, but to install this philosophy you’ve got to have the players. I’m still behind him and I do think it will click at some point. Problem being that we could be in an unspeakable position before it does.
The formation has got to be changed. 4-5-1 against decent opponents. 3-5-2 against the tadpoles in the league.
Over to you Ben.
Sandgaard has shit on Ben Garner. It’s really that simple.
That was a car crash of a game yesterday. We worked a number of good chances but every one ended with a pathetic balloon shot into the stands, much enjoyed by the Barnsley faithful. We had a number of players not performing & imo not capable of performing- O’Connell, Morgan, Clare, who bizarrely all stayed on the pitch when it came to substitutions, while anyone who showed any ability &/or was capable of getting us back into the game, i.e. JRS, Fraser, Dobson, Egbo, were withdrawn. To me those mass substitutions smacked of a manager who’s bang out of ideas. We need Sessegnon, Egbo & Inniss in a back four & hope that Lavelle bucks his ideas up; midfield of Payne (or JFC), Fraser, Dobson & JRS; Stockley & Leaburn up front. Tighten it up, keep it simple, or we will be deep in the mire come Christmas. Oh, & spend some bloody money in January!
Three poor goals conceded basically on the LHS of defence with O’Connel at fault for the second and third because of his total lack of pace and clumsy tackling.
JFC should be one of the first names on the team sheet. The left back situation has not been resolved by switching Clare to the left. Clayden has been discarded but he is a WINGER who should be played as a WINGER where he creates and scores goals. The 4-3-3 system does not work with the players we have available as Stockley’s lack of goals illustrates.
Yes BG talks a decent match however we’re a quarter in the season, as mentioned before I’m dreading October league fixtures 5 home two away plus a cup match, like Jacko forwards are absent defenders don’t know whether their coming or going. we know good teams are built around decent defenders, we need our cameo players back we know who they are play a few minutes then have ten or so matches off or getting booked unnecessary. No money to purchase new blood. I fear end of October our season will be over.
Some of the squad are better than this. Like other comments regarding transfers I think some of the players let go should have been retained. I am not sure how long it is going to take to get the BG game plan, if it actually exists. Route one for survival?
OP – That is a question I asked myself at Accrington. We all love proper football, I grew up on Johan Cruyff, but pretty football in the lower reaches of the 3rd tier, or route one for promotion, let alone survival?
What is the goal here. Total football or getting out of this godforsaken league?
