Grant Basey
I noticed that Grant Basey has been appointed as Cray Wanderers interim manager.
It wasn’t posted, or at least I never saw it that Basey had left The Valley where he was first team development coach under Nigel Adkins and Lee Bowyer.
There were some stories circulating that the former kit-man had become quite destructive and some of his actions detrimental and Johnnie Jackson wanted to remove him from his team hence the recent temporary promotions of Anthony Hayes and Dan Senda from the U23’s to help with first team coaching.
Lee Bowyer was close with Basey and it was under him that the former left back who played for us 46 times played a larger role, but it was also quite telling that Basey did not get the opportunity to follow Bowyer to Birmingham City.
Basey got off to a winning start yesterday in his first game in temporary charge of Cray, who had a much needed win against East Thurrock United. Former Addicks Chris Dickson and Kyel Reid both play for the Eltham based Isthmian Premier League club.

I enjoyed your piece on Grant Basey, as I was also intrigued by his non appearance at match days etc. I looked him up a few weeks ago and found that he was operating a different role at the club from the one he was originally given. Makes sense then that maybe Johnny had not seen the same need.
I am now living in Cyprus for the past 20 years and go back to the 50’s when I supported from the East terrace, and standing on a homemade stool, clinging onto a barrier. Those were the days of supporting your team alongside your opponents supporters.
Ah well, I digress.

Thanks Graham. I saw an old photo of the East Terrace the other day, always sends shivers down my back. Enjoy Cyprus. I have happy holiday memories of the island.
