My 2018 Top Five Favourite TV Shows
To coincide with tonight’s Golden Globes, I thought I’d push this one out.
I watch less and less telly, real time TV anyway and Bermuda unsuprisingly is light years away from Catch Up and iPlayer etc but Netflix, Hula and iTunes are our friend and I can sit on the couch or on a plane and binge through a season of a TV show easily.
I’m always on the hunt for recommendations by the way, but these were my Top Five Favourite TV Shows that I watched last year, bearing in mind I may have been late to jump on them.
1. Unforgotten 1 & 2
I loved this. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar play two London detectives that uncover hidden mysteries and crimes from the past, and then become emotionally attached to them as they and their likeable team rediscover and unravel previously hidden evils.
2. Ozark 1& 2
The closest show to the genre that the legendary Breaking Bad spawned. Suspense and drama as Jason Bateman and Laura Linney strive to keep their family together in the very dark world of drug lords and money laundering.
3. Killing Eve
The intriguing story of Eve and Villanelle. One a bored intelligence officer and housewife, the other a free-spirited mercurial assassin. A little far-fetched at times, but the show managed to combine suspense, drama and comedy very well.
4. Better Call Saul 4
Talking of Breaking Bad. I was reticent early on about this, but Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill is so good. In season 4 after Chuck’s death Jimmy and the other great characters begin to take strides into the criminal world that became Breaking Bad. Superbly filmed and produced. Better Call Saul is no longer in the shadow of Breaking Bad.
5. Anything Anthony Bourdain
I was devastated about the death of Anthony Bourdain (above). One of my heroes and a legend in the kitchen, in writing and on the small screen. Since his tragic death in June I have made a point of trying to watch or re-watch the myriad of TV work he’d done. A Cook’s Tour, No Reservations, The Layover and Parts Unknown are all eminently watchable. Bourdain was a gifted storyteller amongst many other things. RIP.

As almost.a full time traveler and sucked in to where he went , today, like you was so sad about Anthony Bourdain . I loved his irreverence and always wanted to do what he did. When living in NYC I went to Les Halles and while simple enjoyed it. Running a large US publishing company, my cook book division would have been a great place for his talents, but sadly not..
Alan, it is just so sad. Bourdain was such an incredible personality and brought faraway places and ordinary people into our front rooms just by sharing a meal and having a conversation.
To get to that point in your life when you can’t face another morning. No words.
