Charlton 3 Walsall 1

When was the last time we put a game to bed..

I was following the game today via various wifi connections at airports and what a relief it was to put a game to bed in the last few minutes. Stephy Mavididi, who obviously is a talent, confidently tucking away after being set up by Tariqe Fosu, who appeared to quickly remind us of what we have missed these last few months.

From what I heard and have read it sounded a good game, with two attacking sides attempting to win the game. Credit to Walsall who included Mark Kinsella’s son Liam at right back.

During our injury crisis Joe Aribo has been a real plus, and he had another good game and scored again at The Valley to give us a 31st minute lead. Moments later Mavididi hit bar with a great shot. Then frustrating ex-Addicks Academy player (the smallest bloke on the pitch) Erhan Oztumer equalized with a header.

2nd half there were chances both ends and I was worried that we were not going to be able to finish them off. But then with the returning Fosu on for Reeves, we suddenly had more pace and directness in our play.

Mavididi forced a save, Magennis, who hasn’t scored since the middle of November, hit the post, but equally Amos was keeping us in it at the other end. However Fosu was making a difference and then Mavididi was again in the thick of it and Korey Roberts poked into his own goal. Cue chaos in the American Airlines lounge with cheese and crackers all over the shop.

Then I was back on the plane, but was clinging onto wifi as I hoped the Addicks would cling on to their one goal lead. But for the first time in forever, and definitely since September, we scored a third as the boy Mavididi stroked home his second Addicks goal.

Some momentum and 2 points from 5th and 4 points from 4th.

Before the game CA I wasn’t too bothered about winning – I’ve written off our promotion chances and just wanted to be entertained, and I was in buckets second half. Fosu replacing Reeves transformed our game. Of course when we went 2-1 up, my mindset changed a little..Walsall played their part though, and were very entertaining to watch. Their fans made a good noise and stayed to the very end despite our third. My son advises that Otzumer has refused to renew his contract, and will be off in the summer – he looked very good. My son also listened to the Walsall manager interview last week – they had no injuries coming in to this game. A bit of a contrast to us.

Covered End were superb again, as we have been all season other than the Gills game. My shins hurt after celebrating the second two goals!
