Americas Cup 2017 team – Artemis Racing
Named for a Greek goddess, but based in Sweden at the historic Kungliga Svenska Segel Sällskapet (KSSS – the Royal Swedish Yacht Club), the Artemis team is led by Australian Nathan Outerbridge. A gold medalist at London 2012, Outerbridge was part of Artemis’ challenge in 2013, which ended in both disappointment and tragedy after their main boat capsized in strong winds, resulting in the death of British crewmember Andrew Simpson.
Team captain is two time Olympian Ian Percy, OBE and the rest of the crew is packed with experience amassing 12 America’s Cup campaigns, and having competed in 21 Olympics Games, winning 11 medals, including 7 golds.
Artemis has been resident in Bermuda for a couple of years with their HQ on the soon to be fully developed Morgan’s Point peninsula and their team members and families are a familiar sight around the island. The team is owned by Swedish billionaire Torbjörn Törnqvist, co-founder of Gunvor Group, one of the largest commodities conglomerates in the world.
By all accounts Artemis have been practicing well, their early move to Bermuda helping them navigate the waters and are some expert’s favourites to win. Torbjörn Törnqvist has said that if Artemis win, they will remain in Bermuda to defend their Americas Cup title.
