Byrne makes 5th loanee

I remember John Hendry is all I’m saying. March 1992. So throw all five loanees into the team on Saturday and watch one of them win it for us. Although it will have to be four as Botaka is away at the African Cup of Nations with the DR Congo. Shame.

Anyway why am I talking about this? Because Nathan Byrne signed from Wigan today on loan, our 5th loanee in the squad and therefore our last allowed.

Byrne is a quick attacking wing back or winger who came up through the ranks at Spurs and after a few loans finally settled at Swindon where he shone. He then made a big money move to Wolves, signed by Kenny Jackett, who can spot a player and had a reasonable first season at Championship level but was then offloaded by new manager Walter Zenga, who couldn’t spot a player.

Garry Caldwell signed Byrne at Wigan before getting the tin-tac himself and this loan deal allows the St Albans born 24-year old to return south.

For every Scott Carson, and ahem, John Hendry, there are tens of loan players who pass through and barely increase the pulse rate. Maybe Byrne will. He sounds a good player and certainly has the pace and offensive abilities that Robinson wants.
