Charlton Athletic 2 Leeds United 1

First win in 5 or unbeaten in 4. Depends how you look at our closing of this very strange season. I’m just glad that those at The Valley were sent home happy after a 5th goal in Charlton colours for Tony Watt, Watt, Watt and another penalty from Yoni Buyens.

It sounded another game of two halves as Guy Luzon tinkered with his squad resting Jordan Cousins, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Roger Johnson. Luzon’s team selection was also a chance for Alou Diarra to shine in central midfield and for Chris Eagles to play for a new contract out wide. Diarra lasted 11 minutes, Eagles 45. The Frenchman leaving the fray with a knee injury.  The arrival of Player of the Year candidate JBG made a big difference and he had a hand in both goals. However another POTY favourite Stephen Henderson saved a second consecutive penalty pushing Billy Sharp’s strong penalty onto post in the 1st half when the score was 0-0.

Into 10th place, our highest league position since mid-December and fully 20 points away from the relegation places. Who would have thought that a couple of months ago?

In other good news today Charlton’s U18 team won their Development League for the 3rd consecutive season after beating Crystal Palace at Sparrows Lane 1-0, their 8th win in a row. The boys now go onto a national play-off against Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town.

Elsewhere in the League: At the bottom Millwall drew 0-0 at Cardiff, Wigan cling on by the fingertips after beating Brighton 2-1 and Fulham won at hapless Blackpool. At the top Watford are back at it’s summit after beating Birmingham 1-0, Bournemouth let slip a 2-1 lead in the final minute at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Brentford and Wolves both failed to win at home as their collective play-off hopes slipped.
