Despite it being my birthday, I was more than happy to take an early present of 3 points a week ago and therefore I’m not too distraught that we bowed out of the League Cup tonight.
Both sides made changes but County have far the stronger squad and from what I can decipher out here on the Mexican Pacific Coast we lacked depth and a cutting edge, and after two anemic performances in a couple of days I am really hoping that Bob and Roly can address that this week.
Defensively we sounded strong with Nick Pope playing well, although there seems great confusion about Derby’s winner from a free-kick given against Pope for time-wasting. At 0-0 with extra time looming that neither side wanted sounds strange. Can anyone throw some light on that?
Gomez took his place again like an old timer, Morrison got a game and Fox fitted in well at left back, but I have reservations that this division is not always going to be kind to the style of play Peeters wants, especially with the young players he has. However we won’t be playing Derby every week, as I think McLaren’s side are a cut above most in The Championship.

Around the Ties: It was a shame it was MK Dons, but blimey what further embarrassment for Van Gaal and Man U tonight. Leicester lost at home to Shrewsbury, Burnley were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday and WestHam got done on penalties at home to Sheffield United. Fulham won at Brentford, Doncaster beat Watford, Southampton beat Millwall, Forest won at Huddersfield and Gillingham lost at home to Newcastle.

I do recall reading a number of comments (not necessarily here, but on various blogsites) after the Colchester game about how refreshing it was to have a ‘manager’ who valued a cup run and how it built confidence, and how he played his first team. Ho hum.
To be fair to him I think he played a similar team to Colchester with a bench capable of changing a game, but for me it just shows how thin our squad is. Beyond 18, 19 players we are down to academy players.
I believe that Roly prefers his teams to carry smallish squads and believes ‘the network’ will solve any short term gaps brought by injuries or loss of form.
