Brentford 1 Charlton Athletic 1

I would happily have taken a point beforehand, and the opening half-hour was as I envisaged it with the Bees full of confidence and vigour and us, with 7 new signings, trying to find our feet.

Therefore I was pleased that we took a hold of the game late in the 1st half and then from what I heard and obtained from those there, we played very well in the 2nd half, but of course in true Charlton style were left hanging on at the death.

I was after substance today and I think we got that from Peeters side, who obviously sent them out with a plan after half-time. We had the added bonus of an impressive display from Igor Vetokele as well as Johan Berg Gudmundsson. An extra bonus was Solly slotting into his right back spot and being the majorities man of the match. In front of Roy Hodgson too!

Whilst Vetokele has given us a long sought after opportunist up front I have concerns over the lack of pace of man mountain Bikey and Ben Haim at the back. Morrison missing out was the only real surprise in Peeters selection, but as he has said everyone will get their chance. Peeters doesn’t have an awful lot of options at present.

Brentford are a neat unit but in all honesty we will meet much stronger sides with better players. However we are off the mark, and one point could easily have been three, yet for another deflection. Some things never change.

Lots of good reasons to sleep well tonight fellow Addicks. Since I was young….

Around the League: Bournemouth had the result of the day thrashing Huddersfield on their own patch 4-0. Whisper it. Yann scored. Deeney and Vydra were on the scoresheet for Watford in their 3-0 win over Bolton, Millwall beat dirty Leeds 2-0, Fulham lost at Ipswich with Felix Magath bemoaning £11m Ross McCormack’s fitness, and Jose Riga had just 15 players including two scholars as they lost 2-0 at Forest.
