Charlton Athletic 3 Watford 1

“Most of the players are the DNA of Charlton. I’m very happy and very proud and I’m happy to give back to the people. It’s important because we are more than a team we are a squad. And we are more than a squad, we are a club.”

I have an overwhelming feeling of relief over joy. It has been a wretched season but at the very least we grabbed the opportunity to decide our own destiny and put in a performance in front of our own allowing players and fans together to let out a collective deep breath.

There were rightly celebrations too, you can’t afford to pass them up as an Addick, and for the third season in a row the final home game ended with smiles, speeches and hugs all round.

Watford certainly had less impetus than Blackburn, albeit with an injury hit team, and with Riga lining us up in a 4-5-1 formation we took the game to the nothing-to-play-for Hornets and got the all important first goal when Callum Harriott lashed in.

Birmingham were already behind at home to Wigan and the remainder of the 1st half whilst sat at my desk lasted an eternity and there was still another half to come.

It sounded as if we played quite well, although Watford had plenty of possession. It was a night for substance over style but when Troy Deeney scored a blinder, my head dropped and my calculator came out. Deeney is just the sort of forward we need if Roly is looking to spend real pounds and pence, although I suspect understandably Deeney will feel he could do much better.

Then cometh the moment, cometh the man. The skipper starts a new storyline and suddenly we are back in front and I could feel the energy screaming out of my computer.

I hoped Watford couldn’t come back from that, and thankfully we went against trying to test that theory and made in Charlton, Callum Harriott scored his second after a Lawrie Wilson cross. How we have missed those.

Addicks all over could afford a rare smile, especially after Riera got sent off for a second yellow and listening to the remaining minutes on Charlton Live was a joy with The Valley rocking as we saw the game out to give us enough points not to worry about Saturday by the sea at Blackpool.

One final thought tonight, is to send my heartfelt best wishes to the Charlton fan that had a heart attack in the East Stand before half-time. I believe they are in hospital, but in a very serious condition. Addicks everywhere are willing you on.

Keep the youngsters, get rid of some of the dross (no need to mention names) bring in a few battle hardened campaigners and we just might have a season 2014-15 to remember.

Both fullbacks last night, 2 central midfielders, our left winger and for 15 minutes a centre forward were from our academy, the new regime are spending a small fortune on the pitch, with the academy buildings and pitches wise soon to be developed further, I believe the future looks very bright indeed.

I often ask why I bother making the 140 mile roundtrip to The Valley. Certainly there has been more downs than ups the last couple of seasons. But last night served to remind me that you have to have the lows to enjoy the ups. The crowd were magnificent, and the team responded in spades. Well done to all concerned.

It was a great night and the atmosphere was as good as the day we were promoted to the Championship. I am hopeful for the future and think 2014/15 should be very a good season. Always the optimist.

As another fan who makes a 140 mile round trip, I have been left wondering why on many occasions but nights like that take some beating.
Huge credit to the players, the spirit has remained fantastic, the coach (I hope he stays) and the owner, without whom, whatever you think, we’d have been in administration and down -10 points.
The philosphy is bang on – invest in facilities, infrastructure and youth. Let’s see where we are in 3-5 years, better off than QPR I suspect.

Hi CA – have a lovely summer. Relief over joy for me too – and on analysis that relief was obviously about not wanting to watch 3rd division football, but just as much not having to get up at 5.00 on Saturday to drive all the way to Blackpool. The youngsters are a joy – always. Love young Fox. Lets hope Diego now stays at least for one more season – he is great to watch. I screamed with delight at it being Callum and Johnnie and I clapped the team off – but I couldn’t bring myself to stay – and as I left my thoughts were of Chrissie and where he was that night – and how differently I would have felt. Now I just await a response from Ms Meire and the renewal can go in.

Thank you Pat. So I assume that you won’t be going to Belgium for the pre-season exhibition 🙂

CA, like you, I was at my computer with the BBC website and Twitter and the CAFC wall up, goal updates from my brother at the game, along with listening to the commentary of the Champions League on Radio 5 as they did keep going over to the Valley when anything happened. Like you, I felt quite chipper at 1-0, especially as Birmingham were losing right from the off. Like you, I started studying the league table and fixture list for some kind of hope when Watford equalised (was a draw enough if Birmingham lost?; would Doncaster be able to beat Leicester on Saturday?). I haven’t liked the look of that final fixture at Blackpool for quite some time, so now it’s a huge relief that safety has been achieved with a game to spare. No doubt fellow Addicks will probably be entertaining the notion of another win, 51 points and 17th place. Here’s hoping for a more enjoyable season next time round!

This season has been up there with one of worst in my time (beginning in 1975) but I have huge reservations about next season. Anyway, that can wait as it will be nice to enjoy the final game as we have done the last couple of seasons. Envious of those up at Blackpool this weekend, but like you Martin, I’m so thankful that we don’t have to go there looking for a result.
